Abortion

Someone tell me how to make a clicky poll, because I'm lame and don't know how. I've heard that an abortion is the most common procedure performed on a woman. I'd like to see some stats from the bump.  How do I make a clicky poll to avoid calling anyone out?

Re: Abortion

  • I'll save you some trouble - the most common surgical procedure for women of childbearing age is a c-section.

It's actually the most common surgical procedure, period.

  • those stats would include anyone who had a d&c due to m/c - medically that's termed an abortion.

  • To make a clicky you: start a new post, enter in a subject and message, click on the "poll" tab, fill in all the info and voila!
  • its an issue of semantics, really. D&Cs I believe all fall under that category, technically. But many many many women, in a clickly poll, will not say its an abortion because they do not view it that way.

  • Yeah to get an acurate number you actually need to look at "elective abortions" which do not include things like D&Cs since they were medically necessary.  Unfortunatly a lot of antichoice groups will quote an "abortion" number but fail to mention that a good chunck of those were non-elective/medically necessary so that they can further rial people up to get them to think there is the huge epidimic (sp?) of women having abortions.

  • Eh, maybe this isn't something I want ot get into today. I wasn't trying to make anyone feel defensive.  I saw on the news last night this piece about the "that's abortion" group and a billbaord they put up in NYC.  It's offended a bunch of people so they've taken it down. In checking out their website, then Planned Parenthood's I was reading the statistics. I guess I'm hovering my curiosity around how many support it, but not for themselves and that kind of stuff. I think I'm holding it for another day.

  • I don't think anyone is defensive, we were just explaining that the statistic might be technically correct but it would include D&Cs due to miscarriage. Elective abortions are definitely not the most common procedure for women.

ETA: well I guess that the c-section is the most common, but still I don't think you were offensive.

GAWD...you read that link and it doesn't do a lot to put you at ease about having a c-section does it!

  • I didn't read any of the responses as "defensive." I'm certainly not considering I'm as pro choice as they come.

Yes. Medically speaking, it's the same thing.  In fact, when I fill out medical history forms, it asks how many pregnancies I've had and how many have resulted in live births vs. miscarriage/abortion.  I would never say I've had an abortion.  I had a D&C because I had a miscarriage at 9 weeks that did not miscarry naturally.  But, I would guess, statistically, D&Cs (due to miscarriage or optional abortion) are included in that number.

I also read a story regarding that billboard. The billboard was specifically geared towards African American women who have abortions. It said "The most dangerous place for an African American is in the womb" pointing towards the 59.8% abortion rate for Black women in NYC specifically.

That's a pretty shiity thing to put on a billboard.

I am definitely offended by that! I will say that putting out statistics is one thing but adding their own comments with it is very distasteful.

  • I think I saw the minister in charge of the group comment.  They are taking the board down, but he said he's hoping to call attention to the idea that so many African American women choose abortion.  Then they quoted some facts about more planned parenthoods being in neighborhoods where minorities live and was kinda complaining about that, like they were being targeted. To me, that thinking was a little backwards.

There are more Planned Parenthood clinics in low income neighborhoods (which tend to be primarily minority) because oftentimes, PP is the only place that most low income women can afford to go for annual checkups, birth control, cancer and STD screenings.

A representative from PP said on the news that it was false that the majority of them were in low income areas. Idk if that's true.

I guess what I'm saying is that it makes sense if they have clinics where a need is present.
