help! miserable gassy baby

DD is EBF and has always been somewhat gassy, but the last day or so her gas has been totally foul smelling and she is visibly quite uncomfortable.  I'm thinking it's got to be something I'm eating, right?  Would dairy give her this kind of misery?  I feel so bad for her.....it's waking her up.  Any ideas?

Re: help! miserable gassy baby

  • I'm in the same boat and can't figure out what it is in my diet.  I've just been using Mycolin drops and rubbing his tummy.  I have narrowed down the time frame which is after his morning nap and usually in the afternoon.  I've been burping him more frequently and keeping him inclined, but nothing seems to end it all.

  • Mason was SO so so gassy. He still is, but not nearly as bad. It made him extremely uncomfortable and a few days he even cried in pain for hours at a time. It has gotten better, I think as his digestive system has matured.

I started writing down the foods I was eating, and trying to link them up with the gas. I noticed that broccoli, onions and spicy foods made him more uncomfortable, so I cut those out.

Also, I called the lactation nurse about this and she suggested giving him the "I love you" massage. You basically massage the tummy to try to get the gas out. If you are looking at your baby, you start at the bottom left and go up to form an "i", then you start again at the bottom left and form an upside down "L" and then start again at the bottom left and form an upside down "U". It seemed to help a little. I also used gas drops and burped him like crazy before, during, after he nursed. All of this seemed to help a little. The thing that soothed him the most was nursing. Hope some of this is helpful.
