NBR - Make-up Question

My MIL is coming into town next weekend and we both want to go get our make-up done at a dept. store. Neither of us have ever done it and we both feel like we could use some pointers on how to properly do ourselves up.

Which counter do you recommend? Seems like everyone does the Mac counter, but thought I'd get some tips from you guys before we make our decision.

I think it depends on your style. MAC is good but their style is a bit dramatic/theatrical for me, especially if you're trying to learn how to do your own makeup for regular occasions. I prefer Laura Mercier for everyday makeup style - Bobbi Brown is good at teaching tips too, but I think Laura Mercier products are better. I've had some bad experiences with Prescriptives having my makeup done there, so wouldn't recommend them (numerous locations/artists so I think it reflects their training/aesthetic but could be wrong).

fun idea!! i've never done that either, but I've been thinking of heading to sephora soon to do it...i have a gift card to there!

My MIL mentioned Bobbi Brown because she uses their bronzer and needs to pick some up anyway. I was kinda wondering that about MAC. Neither of us wear dramatic looking make-up so I think we'll skip on that. I've never heard of Laura Mercier before. Would we find that counter at Macy's or Nordstrom?

I wear very natural looking make-up and if you find the right person MAC can be a great place to get your make-up done. I have also had luck at Macy's new make-up department called Impulse Beauty, it looks like a mini Sephora and is not available in all of the stores. The nice thing about that was that she could use all different brands instead of sticking to one.

They'll have Laura Mercier at Nordstrom, probably not Macy's though, but not positive.

Ooh, I like that idea! I'll have to see if our Macy's is set-up like that.

My mom & I had them done @ Sephora. I specified that I wanted natural products and that's what I got - great stuff! I especially liked the skincare products. And the undereye concealer!
