Anyone's baby have/had a flat head?

We are trying to decide whether to get a helmet for DD.  She's 5.5 months old and the back right part of her head is flatter than the right.  We've met with a neurosurgeon and had a CT scan done and the doctor said he's not concerned, that it's more cosmetic than anything, and that her brain still has plenty of room to grow.  Her skull hasn't grown together yet either, so he said there is still time for it to correct itself.  He also says you won't be able to tell when her hair grows in.  This is kind of hard for me to believe and as silly as it sounds, I worry about being able to tell when she is wearing her hair in a ponytail.

Since the doc isn't overly concerned, I am worried that we are just being hyper-sensitive first time parents.  But then again I don't want to ignore it if it's not going to get better...

Anyone have experience with this?

Did you invest in a helmet?

If not, did it correct itself?

Please share your experiences.  Thank you!

Re: Anyone's baby have/had a flat head?

  • My kids were tummy sleepers (*gasp* horrors!  hehe) so we didn't have this problem.  But my friend did with all three of her kids.  By their first birthday, as they were rolling, crawling, walking more, they all corrected themselves.  She has 2 girls and their heads are nice and round.  And their heads were completely flat on the back.  It corrected itself.

I'd say if the doctor isn't worried about it, I wouldn't.

  • Sam's head was a bit flat when he was a baby, but as he became more mobile, it worked itself out.

My niece had a super SUPER flat head when she was a baby.  Like, you couldn't hide it at all.  She's almost 4 now, and she's fine.  Or if she does still have a flat head, you can't tell at all.

  • Both of my girls had flat heads (still has it).  With the oldest, I use to get comments all the time how flat the back of her head is.  But no one can tell now because of her hair.  You can only tell when you touch the back of her head.  It's a non issue for us.  For the youngest, you can tell when you put a headband around her head and it's not a perfect circle.  I'm sure it won't be obvious when she has full and longer hair.

The only time that I would consider doing it is if their ears or face is uneven because of the flat spots.  If not, I wouldn't be too worried.

  • i just wanted to comment because my DS is 3 months old and has a flat spot on the back right side- which Pedi Dr pointed out at the 2 month appt. I went back to work and now my Mom and MIL are caring for DS during the week. I can't control what they do during the week but I am concerned now because he still has the flat area. I put DS down at night on the left side and even hold him on the opposite side to feed. I put a call into the Dr but don't know if it's too early to do anything. I just don't want to get to the point where he has to wear a helmet..
