2nd Trimester

Those who have/plan to use disposable diapers

Before DD was born, I read all the reviews for the Diaper Genie etc. and read some scathing ones about pretty much all the products make baby's room "stink". We never had this problem with our diaper thing -- I forget which one we ended up getting, but that is moot.

It wasn't until much later that I realized that people put poopy diapers in these things! Seriously? Whenever DD had a BM we always wrapped it up and put it in a plastic grocery bag (yes, I know we suck for not using the reusable ones) and put it right out in the garage trashcans. Obviously, this isn't possible if you live in an apartment, but is it more common to use these things to dispose of poop? I would imagine that would smell even in a fireproof safe, esp. as the kiddo moves to solids.

Not trying to sound like I am Suzy Clean House, far from it. It just never crossed my mind to out a "dirty" diaper in the diaper disposer.

  • well, you're supposed to flush the poop anyways...which would help make it stink less as well..

  • We dump out the poo in the toilet then put the diaper in the Diaper Genie.  I rarely if ever smell the Diaper Genie...maybe I've grown accustomed to the smell of poo...who knows.
  • We put both wet and dirty diapers in our Diaper Genie....and actually I got these Arm & hammer things you put in when you replace the liner and that really helps the smell.

Obviously you are going to get stench when you put another diaper in, but if it is over powering I just dispose of the diapers and retie the liner.

I think it is a waste of plastic bags and you are already paying the 6 + bucks on the liner...get your money out of it.

  • LOL. Honestly in the middle of the night guess where that smelly poopy diaper is going???? yep, that's right right into the diaper genie. if it smells everyday then I'll change the plastic bag everyday. Going outside every time the baby poops to dispose of diapers would, well actually I'd be in really good shape lol, but not happening.

  • We didn't even register for a Diaper Genie. Both DH and I didn't like the idea of poopy diapers sitting in the trashcan in the house.  When we lived in an apartment we just wrapped them in a plastic bag like OP did and put them outside, and then eventually to the dumpster. Now that we have a house, we still wrap up the dirty diapers and put them in a small trash can on our patio. We throw them in the bigger bins on trash day. Simple!

  • I agree...This is also why I find the diaper champ/whatever pointless. I put the diapers in a trash bag in the garage and seal it then take them out once a week. Once he had more solid poops, I flush them in the toilet.
  • Infant poop isn't so bad, but I hated my diaper champ and got rid of it after 3 weeks. We also now put poopy diapers in grocery bags and throw them out the door until I put them in the outside trash. There is NO way I would ever put a toddler poop in a trash can to sit all day, yuck.

  • We have always just put it in the diaper genie and have never had a problem with the smell. I'm supposed to walk outside with baby in tow every time I need to throw away a dirty diaper? Not gonna happen- especially in Vermont winters. My LO poops 3 times a day! We just use the diaper genie, empty it out regularly and have never had a problem with smell. They're designed for this very purpose and they really do work.

My LO poops sometimes 2-3x a day too. I just keep the plastic bags with the diapers and when I got to change a poopy one I also grab a bag and immediately place the poopy diaper in it and then just throw it out my front door! We've probably been doing this since DD was 6-8 months old at least. Not a big deal!

  • We use the diaper champ, and have always put the poop diapers in it. Smell only escapes when we put in a new diaper or change the bag.
  • When I nannied many many years ago, we put the pee and poop diapers in the diaper genie. The smell wasn't too bad with the lid closed, but I'm tellin ya....when it was time to throw out the liner and retie it...OMG...you could have died. I think I'm skipping the diaper pail altogether and just throwing the dirty diaper in the bin. There's no point in wasting extra money (for us anyway) in the liners and the pail when it's all going to the same place any way. No use in "saving" those dirty diapers for the trash can. BUT....never say never...we'll see what happens.

  • We had a diaper genie in the family room and in the nursery.  We put all diapers in there and changed it when it was full or once a week - whatever came first.  We very rarely had a problem with odor seeping out.  I did occassionally spray the bottom of the plastic canister with bathroom spray when I changed the bag, just to make sure the smell didn't "soak" in to the plastic.

This!  You're not technically supposed to dispose of fecal matter, although it seems like most everyone does when diapering.

  • We put all dirty diapers in there bc our garbage is supposed to be contained in large bags for pickup. Having 8 million diapers tied up in single grocery bags would be against the garbage companies rules.

Our diaper genie lives in the garage and pretty much only recieves dirty diapers. I'm too lazy to traipse out there to toss in wet ones.  And yeah, it stinks. lol

  • My little guy is on solids.. no meat yet but fruit and veggies.  Maybe his poop doesn't smell that bad but I put it all in my diaper genie and his room doesn't smell AT ALL, not even a little and I'm super sensitive to smells, I have candles going in the house any time I'm home.   I clean it out once a week and I can't even tell it's there for the rest of the time.

Maybe every child is different and I think it depends on what they eat.  I keep hearing that when he starts on meat the smell will be pretty bad.

  • As a CDing Mama who believes that poop belongs in the toilet, it is really great to see so many sposie Mamas who flush the poop.  So much better for the water supply as landfills are not designed as fecal-treating facilities.  Plus, it helps with the smell problem too.

Well, this is much more realistic than me walking out to my garage 3 times a day...LOL. Thanks for the tip, I may have to do this when LO #2 gets here. I love the Diaper Genie but double the poop, not sure about that!

  • We have cats so the cat litter gets scooped into a plastic bag then immediatly goes outside to the trash can.  Plan to to the same thing with poop diapers.  No way would I want those sitting around stinking up my house.
