Not happy with ergo?

Hello, I'm a lurker but hoping you ladies will help me out. I had a ring sling and moby wrap for my DD, she outgrew the sling a while ago and recently the moby wrap is starting to wear on my back a bit (DD is about 18 lbs). So I decided to get an ergo from babysteals. My problem is that I'm just not sure I like it. It seems like I am supporting all her weight from my shoulders, and that her bum isn't really well supported by the waist belt. The waist belt is also so thick that it's hard to sit down while wearing her. So, my first question is, am I doing something wrong? Is there some adjustment I need to make in order to be more comfortable?

My second question is, if I decide I don't like my ergo, what carrier would you recommend? I loved the moby, but was hesitant about trying a wrap because I want something with more popability. Would I maybe like a mei tai? Any suggestions would be appreciated! (Also, I bought my ergo for about $70, which would be my budget if I buy another carrier).

Do you have the shoulder straps SUPER tight? That will help.

This. You want her as close to your body as possible. Ditto for the waist belt. I saw a woman at LLL trying an Ergo last week and the waist was so loose, I was worried her baby would slip right out.

The Ergo is not going to be very comfortable to sit in; it's not really designed for that. Although, I can sit more easily in the Ergo Performance than I could in the original.

  • the shoulder straps should be tight, as well making sure the waist is tight. it should be as secure as a backpack would be.

i think i remember the front waist pad being a little stuff when i first got mine, but it has since loosened up with wear.

  • I would definitely keep playing with the straps and the waistbelt to try and make it more comfortable - the weight shouldn't be on your shoulders.  I bet if you post a picture some of the Ergo experts on the board might have some suggestions.

  • Def PIP - At first, I wasn't too sure about the Ergo either but when I tightened the straps all the way, I felt much better.

That being said, yes, I do think you'd like a Mei Tai.  I like how I can cross the straps across my chest on a back carry, it really distributes the weight.  You also might look into a woven.

  • Thanks so much everyone, I will try tightening the straps and see how that works. I also haven't really had a chance to wear DD in it for very long, so I definitely need to give it more of a chance. If I still can't figure it out I will PIP before I switch it out for another carrier. Thanks again!
