Breastfeeding HELP!!

My daughter is 9 days old and I have just been able to get her to latch on using the shields. before that I was pumping and feeding her the bottle. I am having wayyy too much milk ad I am going thru terrible Engorgement. I really want to stop breastfeeding but do not know the best way.  Did any of you stop cold turkey or is there an easier way to do it without being in even more pain..

And how long does this engorgment supposed to last??  Any suggestions would be helpful.

  • Why do you want to quit?

  • do you want to stop because of engorgement? your supply does balance out and it stops being painful. and if you have an oversupply, you might want to consider starting up a freezer stash, so that if you did stop bf'ing, your dd could still have bm for a while.

i'm still bf'ing so i have no advice on stopping.

  • I started introducing more formula to DS and when I pumped I didn't pump until I was empty. I noticed that my supply started dropping and finally got a point that I didn't have any fullness or the need to pump...can't remember how long it took though.
  • if you want to quit, that;s totally fine. i can't help with the weaning bc we still BF but....

if it's only because of the engorgment, hang in there. your milk production will even out to what your baby needs. it takes a few weeks.

  • hmmm, I'm not a LC and you may want to consult one, but maybe you're producing a lot because you were pumping a lot (ie, more than your DD would have been eating)? now that your daughter has latched, your supply should regulate if you continue to feed her. i'm just telling you this in case the reason you want to stop is the engorgement.

  • my engorgement only lasted a couple days.  i had to use the nipple shield too and still do.  your supply will even out, as PP have said.  if you are going to stop BFing, don't let it be because of engorgement!  i would stop pumping for a few days and feed her only on the breast so that you aren't producing more than she needs...at least until your supply slows a little.  HTH!
  • it only lasts a few days.  hang in there.  it's worth it.  DON'T just stop though, you'll get sick.  consult a LC or looking for a BFing support group at your hospital...or La Leche League in your area.
  • Yea I wanted to stop because of the Engorgment. I've been crying all day because of the pain and trying to deal with a newborn and 2 yr old... But because I see this is still normal and that most of you went thru it I will try to keep going...I really didnt want to stop because of all the pros that comes with bfeeding and loosing weight... So I will hang in there and try to strictly breast feed and not pump.. Thank you..
  • I highly suggest that you contact a LC ASAP. ?It was one of the best things that I did in the first couple of weeks. ?Try to find an independent one that will come to your house- they are usually better than the ones at the hospital.

  • Yay! Glad you are motivated to keep trying. It will be totally worth it. Just nurse nurse nurse and don't pump anymore. Try to go without the bottles for a while. Your supply will regulate and nursing will be so easy in a little while you will love it. Not only is breast milk best for baby, nursing is SO much easier than bottles. It's always ready, always warm, nothing to clean up or sterilize, and FREE, plus you lose weight doing it. It is so hard at first, but it is an investment. You can do it! Have a glass of wine and some big dessert for yourself.

  • I just went through this same problem. I had to pump at first because DS was in the NICU, and then had major oversupply issues once I started trying to nurse. For me it worked itself out in about two days. The main thing was to not pump anymore (or if you absolutely need to relieve pressure, just pump for like 30 seconds), and to feed him on one side only for each feeding. This will help you empty the breast so your DC gets the foremilk and hindmilk (when I wasn't doing this I noticed my DS seemed unsatisfied and fussy), but still keeps the other one full so your body gets the signal to stop milk production.

     Good luck!
