Cloth Diapering

Do I need more diapers?

How many diapers were you using in a day during the newborn stage?

How many are you using in a day now?

We are easily using 2 dozen diapers a day.  I have to wash at least once a day or I would be stuck with no clean diapers and multiple loads to wash.  We have almost 40 diapers and it seems that I am always running close to having nothing clean to put on my lo's butt.  Will she start to stay dry longer in between changes or am I lucky enough to have a kid that will require me to order a much larger stash?

Re: Do I need more diapers?

  • Wow, I've never heard of anyone using 2 dozen diapers a day.  That'd be really expensive if you were using sposies!  Why is it that you have to change her that often?

Because she's wet.  She screams the second her diaper is messy.  I have yet to change a clean diaper.

  • Two dozen diapers per day for one baby? Easily? Even at the newborn stage, that seems extraordinary to me. Are you having an issue with the absorbency of your diapers?

My boys each went through probably 12 diapers a day max when they were brand new, and that is seriously a maximum. Really it was probably more like 8-10.

These days, I probably change 6-7 times during the day. They sleep through the night with one diaper.

  • What kind of diapers are you using? Maybe you need fleece liners or something so she doesn't feel so uncomfortable when her diaper gets a little wet.

I have mixture of KLO, prefolds, BG 4.0's, 3.0's, and AIO, Flips, and Kawaiis.  The KLOs and prefolds are soaked when we change her.  We dont have any leaking issues.  She lets us know the second her diaper is wet or dirty no matter which diaper is on her.  She will not settle down until she has a clean bum.  I don't want her sitting in a dirty diaper so I don't mind changing her so much.  I was just hoping that this was normal for a newborn and that I wouldn't need more diapers.

  • Wow! And even fleeece liners don't help? DD is usually pretty dry when I take a diaper off of her with a fleece liner.

I went through 12-15 a day when DD was a newborn. She slept for a decent bit at a time, though.

Nowadays we probably go through 10 or so a day, but she's in daycare and they check her every hour, so sometimes she goes through 8 just at daycare, and then I change her at least twice once we're home.

We use fleece at night to get a little extra sleep time but she will still wake up for a dirty diaper and she wont eat until she is clean.  I don't mind changing the diapers during the day and neither does dh.  I love that cloth diapers dont really allow for dd to sit in a dirty diaper as long as a sposie would.  I didnt realize that she was wetting so many diapers until someone posted about only having a dozen or so dirty diapers in a days worth of laundry.  I guess I will just have to add more diapers to my stash so i can have a little more wiggle room in my laundry routine.

Honestly, 24 diapers a day is a lot. I might mention it in passing to my pedi just to be sure there's nothing else going on.

I don't think she's peeing too much.  It just sounds like she's really sensitive to feeling even the slightest bit wet.  DS pees a lot like this too, but he doesn't mind unless he's soaked.  When I put him down for naked time, he'll pee 2 or 3 times in just 15 minutes or so, and diaper is always damp just a few minutes after I put it on him.  If I changed him every time he peed, I'd be changing him every 20 or 30 minutes!
