Hey ladies. So I have a question that MAYBE someone will be able to help me out with.
I took my best friend to the doctor today b/c she was leaking fluid. She is only 17 weeks. She called me and told me she thought she peed her pants. When I got there she was still leaking and it was clear. It smelled like chlorine. They listened to the baby's heartbeat and did a pelvic exam. The ultrasound tech had left so she goes in first thing in the morning for an ultrasound. They didn't elaborate too much on what was going on. I don't see how it could be anything other than her fluid. Is there anyway for the baby to make it from this point if it is her fluid? I'm so worried for her!
Re: Amniotic fluid?
This. The definitely should have checked to see if it was amniotic fluid. It can be done quickly and easily. I would hope that they would have done that and if it were actually amniotic fluid they would have sent her to the hospital.
I had a friend whose water broke at about 22 weeks and she carried her baby almost to full term. She was on very strict bedrest for the remainder of her pregnancy, and the baby's muscle development was slightly delayed, but now he is completely healthy.
This. My Dr. did a PH test and then took a swab and put it on a slide to see if it would crystallize, which I guess amniotic fluid does. Mine was neg on the Ph strip but crystallized so I was sent to L&D to be further examined and there everything looked OK. I was much further along though, and was induced 3 weeks later due to low fluids, so who knows.
She should get another opinion and honestly if she keeps "peeing her pants" I would go to the ER. Thats a lot of fluid to loose for 17 weeks.
Lots of things sound weird....
They should have done the PH test like PP mentioned.
I'm also surprised at a pelvic exam b/c of risk of infection.
They could have done a u/s to monitor how much fluid was in there.
It's very likely she would be put on bed rest if her amniotic fluid is leaking... but they just sent her home??!!! I find that very strange. When are they supposed to let her know if it was in fact amniotic fluid?
They did do a PH test but didn't say anything about it. I just figured they were testing for it. Come to think about it now, the doctor did say at one point that there was no fluid when she was examining. I don't know if that meant there was none leaking at all or just none in that area. They are doing an u/s tomorrow morning.
If you are leaking fluid, it will often pool inside and would be visible upon examination. That is what I was told when I went in, that there was good that there was no visible pooling. That may be what they meant or not.
That is good then. I just have no idea what else it could be.
Hopefully so! Although I did smell her jeans when she took them off (gross but you do anything for your friends) and it smelled like chlorine, not at all like pee.
I went in at 23 weeks, I swore it was amniotic fluid..nope
just pee.
