Before DD was born, I read all the reviews for the Diaper Genie etc. and read some scathing ones about pretty much all the products make baby's room "stink". We never had this problem with our diaper thing -- I forget which one we ended up getting, but that is moot.
It wasn't until much later that I realized that people put poopy diapers in these things! Seriously? Whenever DD had a BM we always wrapped it up and put it in a plastic grocery bag (yes, I know we suck for not using the reusable ones) and put it right out in the garage trashcans. Obviously, this isn't possible if you live in an apartment, but is it more common to use these things to dispose of poop? I would imagine that would smell even in a fireproof safe, esp. as the kiddo moves to solids.
Not trying to sound like I am Suzy Clean House, far from it. It just never crossed my mind to out a "dirty" diaper in the diaper disposer.
Re: Those who have/plan to use disposable diapers
We put both wet and dirty diapers in our Diaper Genie....and actually I got these Arm & hammer things you put in when you replace the liner and that really helps the smell.
Obviously you are going to get stench when you put another diaper in, but if it is over powering I just dispose of the diapers and retie the liner.
I think it is a waste of plastic bags and you are already paying the 6 + bucks on the liner...get your money out of it.
We didn't even register for a Diaper Genie. Both DH and I didn't like the idea of poopy diapers sitting in the trashcan in the house. When we lived in an apartment we just wrapped them in a plastic bag like OP did and put them outside, and then eventually to the dumpster. Now that we have a house, we still wrap up the dirty diapers and put them in a small trash can on our patio. We throw them in the bigger bins on trash day. Simple!

My LO poops sometimes 2-3x a day too. I just keep the plastic bags with the diapers and when I got to change a poopy one I also grab a bag and immediately place the poopy diaper in it and then just throw it out my front door! We've probably been doing this since DD was 6-8 months old at least. Not a big deal!
This! You're not technically supposed to dispose of fecal matter, although it seems like most everyone does when diapering.

We put all dirty diapers in there bc our garbage is supposed to be contained in large bags for pickup. Having 8 million diapers tied up in single grocery bags would be against the garbage companies rules.
Our diaper genie lives in the garage and pretty much only recieves dirty diapers. I'm too lazy to traipse out there to toss in wet ones. And yeah, it stinks. lol
My little guy is on solids.. no meat yet but fruit and veggies. Maybe his poop doesn't smell that bad but I put it all in my diaper genie and his room doesn't smell AT ALL, not even a little and I'm super sensitive to smells, I have candles going in the house any time I'm home. I clean it out once a week and I can't even tell it's there for the rest of the time.
Maybe every child is different and I think it depends on what they eat. I keep hearing that when he starts on meat the smell will be pretty bad.
Well, this is much more realistic than me walking out to my garage 3 times a day...LOL. Thanks for the tip, I may have to do this when LO #2 gets here. I love the Diaper Genie but double the poop, not sure about that!
