2T versus 3T--much difference?

Hey, all! I'm trying to buy LO's clothes for the summer...is there a huge difference between a 2T dress and a 3T dress?

Re: 2T versus 3T--much difference?

  • My DS is just growing out of 2T shirts. Most (but not all) of his 2T shirts are getting short on him - if he raises his hands up you can see his stomach - so we've almost switched to all 3T shirts and pajamas. However, his pants are all 2T. Some of them fit great and some are still too big. I think it depends on the brand for some clothes. How do 3T clothes fit him now? If they are just a little baggy, I say go for it. If you buy the pants/shorts that have the adjustable waist (Oshkosh, Gymboree and other places have them) then you can adjust the pants so they fit around the waist. I did this for this summer with shorts. They are all 3T but have an adjustable waist.

  • I'm sorry, I just saw that you asked about dresses. It must be almost Friday. I imagine dresses are kind of like shirts, you can buy them a little big and it'll be ok.

  • If it ends up being too big, you can always pin it or sew it in at the sides when the time comes, but you can't make it bigger if it's too small.

    Good point! Thanks for responding!

  • It depends on the brand of course, but mainly the difference is in length. 3T is a bit wider too, but more longer then wider compared to 2T in my experience.

FWIW, I had bought DD1 a ton of winter clothes in advance, in 2T, thinking she would be in that size for a while....well, she hit a growth spurt and only lasted in 2T for about 3 months! Of course now DD2 is wearing all those 2T clothes in place of the 24mo stuff because it's basically the same thing, just 2t is a little longer then 24mo.

I buy a lot of clothes at Target and if you're debating on sizes, I would go with 3T from there. Baby Gap, on the other hand seems to run long, so with them I would stick w/ 2T. ON is similar sizing as Target, if not smaller, so 3T from them too. HTH!
