February 2011 Moms

DS slept for 7 hours last night!

So we changed DS's diaper, fed him, and put him to bed last night around 10:30p, at which point he fell asleep very quickly.  I laid down as well as DH, and DS (and DH & I) didn't wake up until 5:30a!!!!  I woke up super confused and freaking out thinking something was wrong (DS has slept for 5-6 hours some nights, but typically on days that he didn't sleep well during the day, and he did get an adequate amount of sleep yesterday during the day), but LO was just cozily sleeping away.  I got him up, changed him, and fed him, and apparently he was still tired because he just went back to sleep.  DS is gaining weight well, still feeding about 11-12 times a day (typically during the day and not as much at night) and still has about 6-8 dirty and 11-12 wet diapers per day.  I LOVE the fact that he can sleep this long, but wonder if I should be waking him up to feed him one time in the middle at night?  But, if he is doing so well in all areas mentioned, should I just leave him be and hope this is the pattern he prefers?

(*Also to note we did start reflux meds a few days ago which greatly decreased the amount of waking with grunting/choking/swallowing he has while sleeping, so maybe this is affecting how well he is sleeping?)

  • Congrats to you!!!!!!!! I'm not breast feeding but based on my pediatrician and ds1 and ds2, let him sleep. During the day if he sleeps a long time, I would wake him up, but not at night. That way he can get used to being up more during the day and less at night.

  • Enjoy it! My LO slept for 5 hours last night and I felt THAT was a Godsend!

BTW OP, I have a question... in the pic of your baby boy there's a weird fleshy colored thing at his chest. What is that? Is it a baby doll leg or something?

  • I would leave him.

Last night I made the mistake of waking LO to eat because it had been 5 hours...he wouldn't go back to sleep for 3 hours after that. MAJOR FAIL on my part...I knew better but figured I better get a feed in for him before I went to bed.  You betcha I won't be doing that again.......let him sleep away!

  • Haha yes, it is actually my mom's thumb, they made me do a grandparent photo shoot with baby the last time they were here and he was really awake, and we got some great pictures of him with his eyes open.  Now, just to get a picture of me, DH, and DS! :-D

  • My DD sleeps 4-5 hours at night, and my pedi said not to wake her. I think last night she would have gone longer but I got nervous, woke her up, changed her and fed her.
