If your child is on asthma medication...

Can you please share your experiences?

Dylan's got a chronic cough and lung sounds that may indicate asthma (improved after neb treatment).

They're staring him on Singulair daily and a rescue inhaler 3-4 times daily when the cough is present.

I'm shaking in my boots about Singulair.  I've read some not kind reviews about kids having behavioral changes with it.

Any words of wisdom or advice with Singulair or rescue inhalers?

TIA

Our IF journey: 1 m/c, 1 IVF with only 3 eggs retrieved yielding Dylan and a lost twin, 1 shocker unmedicated BFP resulting in Jace, 3 more unmedicated pregnancies ending in more losses.
Total score: 6 pregnancies, 5 losses, 2 amazing blessings that I'm thankful for every single day.

  • DS has allergy-induced asthma (and I think exercise-induced, especially when it's allergy season - it gets worse when he runs).  We've tried Singulair, without really good results.  He didn't have the behavior changes, it just didn't really work.

Right now, he's on an inhaler (Flovent?  I can't remember) every day during allergy season - both spring and fall.  In fact, I should probably get that refilled because he'll have to start it in March, I'm sure.  He also has an albuterol rescue inhaler which he hasn't needed in quite awhile.  He also takes zyrtec everyday during allergy season.

On that regime, he seemed a lot better this fall.  But, his spring allergies are worse, so we'll see...

    Same with my son.

My son also gets Nasonex nightly and allergy shots weekly.

  • My son is 2 and a half and has cough variant asthma which sounds like what your son has.  He is fine during the day but coughs constantly at night and this stops after the albuterol treatment.

He had some wheezing at one and a half which is when the dr. first starting mentioning asthma.  He had albuterol and plumicort to use when the night coughing started for  2 week regimes.  It worked for about a year, he only needed it on 1 or 2 occasions.  Then, this past September the night coughing started and in Nov. our dr. recommended us to a specialist.  They allergy tested him for the usual and recommended eliminating all dust, pet dander etc even though he did not test allergic to it because it still stresses the lungs.  The dr. said they don't seasonal allergy test until closer to age 7.   So we rehomed our cat and keep his room clean.  He also prescribed Singular and advised us to use zyrtec daily during allergy seasons.  He takes one pill a day at night as a chewable.  The coughing stopped completely after being on the pill for about 2 weeks.

Then in Jan. we took him off of the pill and the coughing started again so we put him back on it. Since being on the Singluar he has not needed the albuterol or plumicort at all with zero coughing.  I believe he has seasonal allergy asthma and have just started him on zyrtec as well for the upcoming spring allergy.  We had unusual high temperatures this week for VA. and his nose immediately started running etc. so we wills see what happens.  We also worry about all of the medications but I don't see an alternative.  The night coughing is horrible.  He doesn't sleep and the inhaler medicines seem strong too.  Our dr. said singluar is mild and safe and he could be on it for years.  So I feel like it is the lesser of the 2 evils.  I haven't noticed any mood changes.  Sometimes after his albueterol and plumicort I felt like he was aggressive and jumpy but I haven't seen this with the Singular.  He takes it at night before bed so I don't know.

  • O.K. I just read the websites with the Singulair side effects.  One that sticks out in my mind is bad dreams as he has been having bad dreams lately.  That is scary.  Were you offered an alternative medicine?  I don't know what we would be able to switch him to.
