How far in advnace should you start taking Prenatal Vitamins?

Hi Ladies,

I am visiting over from the knot boards.  I am getting married next July 2012.  FI and I want to start having kids a month or 2 after we are married.  I will be 30 and he will be 31.  I was wondering if we know we want to start a family right away what can I do now to prepare my body?  I am trying to lose about 15-20 lbs for our wedding day.  I already eat pretty healthy and I exercise 4-5 days a week.

Is it too early to start taking prenatal vitamins?

Thanks!

  • I was taking a good quality multivitamin, which had plenty of folic acid in it. I switched to a prenatal one or two months before we started trying.

  • What I read when we started thinking about it was that it was ideal to start taking them 3 months before.

  • I need the iron anyway, so I started taking them almost a year ahead. You can't really start too early.

No need for expensive Rx ones, though. I just buy Health Balance at Costco - 270 for $8. As long as they have 800-1000 mg folic acid, you're good to go.

I'll throw out that I think the most beneficial things I've done are weight training  and yoga. I've kept both up, and a really strong core has kept me feeling good this far. I think the combo has also helped my balance, which is good as I get bigger. Get into a routine now so that when you do get pregnant, you can keep it up.

  • No, the sooner the better. The folic acid needs to build up in your system.

  • I was already taking a multi-vitamin before we started trying.  My doctor told me to add folic acid at least 3 months prior to going off my birth control.  When we "officially" started trying I switched to an OTC prenatal with at least 800 mcgs of folic acid.  Then when I got pregnant I added a DHA supplement as well, according to the doctor's advice. Good Luck!

  • Thanks for the input ladies it sounds like it can't hurt to start now :)  Plus I think Folic Acid is also good for your nails and hair as well!!  Good luck with your babies on the way!

  • About a year in advance.

  • I took them as soon as we started TTC, and we conceived a month later so at least I had a one month jump start :)

  • I have personally taken prenatal for the past 10 years ( I am 31)and my doctor has supported that. I always found it to be beneficial for my skin, hair and nails, too!
