Natural Labor Induction Methods?

I am so ready to have this baby.  Has anyone tried natural induction methods to bring on labor?  This is my first baby and I just want to be careful.

  • There is some sort of raspberry tea that you can drink. I forget the exact name of it.

  • sex, pinneapple, walking, some kind of tea, spicy foods, castor oil...there really is a lot.  But I don't think any of them will work unless your body is ready.  Have fun trying though! :)

  • Check with your doctor as to what's safe, but these are the ones I've heard of:

    - Lots of walking
    - Lots of sex
    - Spicy food
    - Jumping jacks or bouncing on an exercise ball
    - Evening primrose oil supp (1000mg/day)
    - Raspberry leaf tea
    - Accupuncture

I've also heard of drinking castor oil, but I've heard mixed things about that...not to mention it sounds disgusting, lol.

But I firmly believe that babies come out when they're ready, and that while some of these things may bring on contrax or ready the body for labor, labor won't come until baby says so. I feel your pain, though, I'm SO ready!

  • my Dr. even said to try rocking in a rocking chair.

Of course he could have just made it up because he saw how disappointed I was that I wasn't dialated at all Wink

  • I was told to avoid the castor oil until you're late.  I've heard it can have some nasty side effects which can make things very uncomfortable if you do go into labor.

Good luck, but don't get your hopes up too much I haven't heard the best results from any of these!

  • I've tried everything but the oils and acupuncture, and I think they just stay in until they want to come out. I'm still staying active though because I heard that walking and staying upright at least encourages dilation and effacement so things will move faster when he does decide to come meet us! Good luck.

  • I am spending some quality time on my exercise ball each night, and taking 1000mg of evening primrose oil daily. I feel like those are both "acceptable" things to be trying at 37 weeks. I'm not trying to coax baby out just yet...just trying to make sure my body is ready for when she is (i.e., nice, wide, open pelvis from being on the ball....and helping my cervix to ripen/soften with the EPO).

  • I've been walking a lot, drinking red rasberry leaf tea and eating pineapple but I haven't made any progress yet.  I'm going to go blow up my yoga ball today.  I want little one to make an appearance soon but I also want him to be ready so I've only really tried things that are good for both me and LO.  Also my nurse said drinking really cold OJ works.  I'll probably be making a trip to the store for some OJ today.

  • I was 39w5d and I tried out my breastpump for 5 minutes on each side and my water broke that night.  I was only 1cm so I had to get pitocin shortly after I got to the hospital.  My DH thinks to this day that DS came before he was really ready, but I am of the feeling that he was just helped a little bit by the nipple stimulation.  I wanted to let you all the facts, but DS was born at a healthy 7lb, 5oz and 20 inches long.

Red rasberry leaf tea could/should be consumed throughout pregnancy to strenthen and tone the uterus. It does not bring on labour.

  • I'm laughing as I type.. but galloping has been suggested before. I figured if I brought it up maybe you would laugh so hard you would go into labor. lol

I wouldn't recommend anything until your body is ready. As uncomfortable as you may be.. your baby will come out when they are ready, and from what I gather, nothing actually works unless your body/baby is ready.
