To bus or not to bus?

Oh, the decisions that we parents have to make! Do you think kindergarten is too early to put your kid on a bus? I'm filling out the forms for Lily and I just don't know. If she takes the bus to school, she'd have to catch it at 6:45 AM. That's 45 minutes before school starts. She's an early bird, but that's early! I dunno...I guess it would be nice to have the option, especially if Char is still asleep and I'd have to wake her to take Lily to school. Opinions anyone?

Re: To bus or not to bus?

  • Can you sign her up for bussing but still take her to school when you want/can? If so that would at least give you the option for mornings you or Charlotte is sick or something else happened to where you can't take her that day. My only suggestion there is to make sure she rides the bus the first day of school so she knows what bus and where to go etc.. For future instances when she may need the bus.

I am thinking that I would do this too, if I had the option. I would probably have her go the first full week on the bus though and maybe periodically so she doesn't forget how to and where to go too. Just be sure to mention it when you sign her up, but I am fairly certain that if there is a big group of kids, they won't have to many issues with it, like they would if they had to stop at your house every morning just for her not to ride. KWIM?

  • Will any other kids from your neighborhood be on the same bus? I ask because my nephew is in kindergarden and the only reason my SIL let's him take the bus is because there is a third grader and sixth grader 2 doors down so they keep an eye out for him and make sure he gets on the bus ok. The sixth grader actually gets him from his classroom at the end of the day and takes him to the bus. It makes me SIL feel a little more comfortable. Plus they are both girls and LOVE my nephew and he thinks it is cool and calls them his girlfriends:-)

  • I would definitely recommend it if you plan on having her ride the bus in 1st grade. Kindergarten is the only year when the teachers & bus drivers really pay attention to making sure the students get where they need to go.

DD had to wear a hat with her name, bus number and teacher on it in Kindergarten to ensure she never got lost. By the time she started 1st grade they just assumed she knew the routine so she was expected to navigate everything on her own.

  • I would be loath to wake a sibling but I would also hate to have my child on a bus that long and that early. Will she be riding with older kids as well or is it just a Kindergarten bus? That might impact my decision as well. DH feels strongly that we should drive our kids so that's probably the route we'll go when the time comes.
