2nd Trimester

Anyone have 2 or more c-sections?

I had an emergency c-section with my daughter 6 years ago. My dr gave me the option of a repeat or a VBAC. I would like to try a vbac because I worry that the c-section would be harder to recover from the second time around. I would love to hear any of your situations or opinions. Thanks

  • I also had an emergency c-section with my daughter and am trying for a VBAC this time around.  There is a VBAC board here that might be helpful to you.  From what I've heard though, a repeat c-section is easier to recover from than the first being that you are more prepared for what recovery entails.  That being said, I've heard planned sections are easier on moms than emergency ones.

  • im about to have my 3rd c-section...honestly the 2nd one was so much easier to recover from than the 1st
  • Im in the same boat, (C section 12 months ago yesterday).... one of my good friends just had her second via C section and she said she healed faster and felt like her body was better off having not gone through the stress of labor. She was really glad she had the C section...

However, a family friend that had 4 kids had her first two C section and 2nd two VBAC, and said if your doctor thinks you can have a successful VBAC to do it, she said her C section recoveries were not bad, but that she felt like she was back to normal in 2 days after a normal birth...

I know that doesnt help with a decision, but that has been the input I have recieved so far... I am going to discuss it with my doctor and follow his advise.

  • This will be my third and I am not looking forward to the recovery. My second one was much harder than then first. Although my experence was much better the second time. I think because I knew what I was getting into.
  • My subsequent c-s have been easier to recover from than the first.  I tried for VBAC and failed.  There can be long term consequences with a c-s.  For example, I am at risk for placenta accreta this pregnancy -- my risk would be much lower if I had not had multiple c-s.  I also have other issues with scar tissue.  So I would definitely try for VBAC.  You might ask L&D nurses who the VBAC friendly doctors are.  A friendly OB seems to be really important.
  • I can't help with the VBAC since I am not a candidate, but I had an emergency classical c-section with DS because he was born at 24 weeks.

I had a scheduled c-section at 36 weeks with DD due to my OB's concerns about my uterus rupturing from the classical T incision from DS. I got pregnant rather quickly and unexpectedly when he was 8 months old and I was supposed to wait a year.

This time around I am once again having a repeat c-section at 36 weeks and this will be my last.

When they came in recovery 1 hour after my section and told me to sit up in bed I was horrified. I was afraid to move even the slightest bit since I had never had any type of major surgery before. Once 24 hours had passed, my catheter was removed and I was able to get up and out of bed, I was shocked at how fast my recovery was. It was just as quick and pleasant with DD. I only took percs in the hospital and went home on 800 mg of ibuprofen. I only had to take them for a few days. I am hoping for a repeat performance although I am still terrified at the thought of having to go under the knife again!

  • We have another breech baby so far this time, but hopefully he turns for me so I can do VBAC. I have a friend that had a planned 2nd c-section and I went to see her the day after she had her DD and she was awful. It took a lot longer for her to recover and she just looked terrible. I know it can be different for everyone, but I really hope I can have a VBAC. I don't want to deal with that pain.

  • I'm going on #4.....My first 3, are 21 mths apart, and the last 2, will be 2 and a half yrs apart. it is risky. But I feel fine, have a good feeling about it.
  • I had an emergency c/s with both of my previous 2, and the 2nd was much easier to recover from. I attribute it to many things: I knew what to expect, they used Dermabond, instead of staples, and I had no option to dwell on it b/c I had a 2 yo. to take care of, too. Part of me wishes my hospital would do a vbac so  I could just get up and walk around shortly after delivery and not have a catheter, but the idea of actually giving birth now scares me to death when I know how easy it is to just have them cut the baby out. This will also be my last c/s.

  • I had an emergency c-section with my first daughter in 2001 due to an abruption. I was going to try VBAC with my second daughter but did not end up being able to due to preterm labor and not progressing on my own. My second c-section was an absolute BREEZE compared to my first one! I was up and walking later that evening and took a shower the next day -- all by myself! I had a vertical cut the first time, and that could have made it so difficult. But it was so incredibly easy this last time! I now have to have another c-section because of my two prior c-sections (my doctor's won't let me opt for VBAC this time around).

  • Wow, thank you all for the advice and storied. It makes me feel better that the majority of you had easy repeat cs. That makes this a little easier for me to decide.
