piggy back post off of: for those bottlefeeding breastmilk

So I was reading all the responses to that post, and it intrigued me. My step mom suggested I bottle feed at night, and I assumed I couldn't do that because it would mess up my supply ?? I'm a 2nd time Mom but a first time EBFer, so sorry if this is a stupid question. I thought I would get engorged or whatever if I actually went all night without BFing, and that my supply would diminish. No? Cause I'll tell you right now, I would loooooove to bottle feed at night! DH has been feeding DD once a night with pumped milk and I get up the other 2-3x she wakes up, and my boobs are sore and full after just skipping that feeding.

Give me your expertise ladies :) TIA!

  • My boobs only fill at night when I wake up. It's like I realize then that I didn't nurse Adena for the past 2-3 hours and just fill up. If I had known it would be this easy to pump/bottle feed at night I would have done it with my first two babies! It's too bad I figured it out with my last baby.

It's weird how when I look at my pump now at night, I just have letdown immediately. I have to hook up the pump to me FAST or else I'll have milk everywhere in a minute.

  • I end up being super full/lots of leaking if I skip a feeding/husband bottle feeds LO overnight. When discussing with my LC she said that even if LO gets a bottle I should pump after the next feeding/at the time she's getting the bottle in order to not mess with supply. Your body only knows to make milk if your breasts are being emptied.

  • It is quite nice to bottle feed at night so DH can feed DS as well. Usually what we will do is DH goes to get the bottle and warm it up while I change his diaper and reswaddle him

You will, however, need to pump otherwise it is going to mess with your supply. I only pumped to maintain things but I stopped pumping at night because of sheer exhaustion. A couple times of this and it totally messed with my supply which means I used up all my stock in the fridge right now and he is having to EBF- thank god he seemed to randomly fix his latch issues this week.

  • DD gets up about 2-3times a night depending on when we go to bed. if i go to bed around the 9pm feeding then she will sleep until about 12:30/1am. I feed her on one side and then i go downstairs to pump the otherside. When she gets up again for the next feeding then I feed her from both sides so I can get through the rest of the night without feeling full and I can pump again when I get up. Its just easier for me to BF at night rather then having to go downstairs to get a bottle, heat it up and then bring it back upstairs.

  • Ok so there really isn't a way to skip all night - unless your lucky like Tiffany :) I really didn't think so. Last night, before I had a chance to read the responses, I pumped at 9 and DD had a bottle. She stayed awake untill abt 1030 then she didn't wake again until 2a! At that point DH fed her a bottle so when she got up at 5a (more normal 3 hour stretch) I was super full. Fed DD on one side and tried to get her on other but she wasn't haven it. I ended up pumping both boobs just to empty them and I still got almost 4 ounces so I was really full. And yes, I was a leaky mess at 5, which I figured would happen. Hmmmmm how to make this work...gotta figure out somehow to make it work - I need sleep!

  • I hear you.  You'll never get sleep if you still wake up to pump when DH is feeding LO a bottle!  We've been giving DD a bottle (of expressed milk of course) at the 5 am feeding.  So that means I feed her at 1 or 2 am, and then I do nothing until about 8 am.   Yeah I'm full by then and not completely comfortable and I need some sleep!  This hasn't messed up my supply.  I just do more feeding/pumping during the day.  Your body will accommodate.
