How much would you spend on wooden letters and painting supplies? I want to make my own but there is also some local who makes them she would do my babies name for $50. Is that reasonable?
With the weekly 40% off coupons, you can get them for a fraction of the price if you are crafty at all. I usually pick up acrylic paint when it is on sale for $1 or less. The letters can vary due to size and font you pick.
11.00 a letter is a standard if you are getting someone to make them. I did my own and it was 2.99 a letter and got some craft paint. it was easy and I did a pretty good job. with brushes, paint and everything under 20.00 ~ and I used a coupon for the brushes...
I would attempt to do it myself before I paid someone $50.00 to do it. Letters are 1.99 at Wal-mart, or a craft store. So total you should out about $20.00 that saves you about $30.00 you could use on clothes for the LO.
I got my letters at Walmart for $2 each (needed 6 letters). The paint was $2 each (got 3 colors) and a pack of varried sized paint brushes was $5. Paid a total of $23 for it. My mom and I worked on the craft together, so it was bonding for us, and we were making something for my LO...which to me, you can't put a price tag on.
I think it is a great idea to work on the letters with your mother! I am totally going to do that and I know she will love it!
I plan on doing the letters myself as well. I am not the most crafty person but I figure, how hard can it be? Honestly, $50 sounds very steep. Do you have an artsy friend or family member that can help you out?

I had to buy a total of 12 letters for both baby names and only spent $18. At hobby lobby in the decor section they have white and black letters. If you want to paint them a different color get the white. I say saving the money would be worth doing it yourself IMO.

That's a complete rip-off. I bought the entire alpahabet (decided to do a border on one wall) at Hobby Lobby this weekend for under $2.00 per letter. DH did a striped accent wall so we had the paint for the letters - but I didn't spend much more than $50 for the whole alphabet and they are really nice, all wood, beveled letters.
If I did only his name it would have been less than $16 plus say another couple of dollars for paint.
I found a really great site today for ordering wooden letters. It's a little more pricey than the store but they have a decent number of fonts you can choose from. My baby's name is five letters and I paid $19.95 shipping included for them.
I went to Hobby Lobby and got wooden letters ($1 each and I needed 6) and bought two colors of paint ($7-10), and paintbrushes ($5). Cheaper plus I feel like they mean more since I made them for him myself :-)
I was lookin at this site too. The reason I had even considered the custom made letters was because I live in a small town and we don't have many craft stores, I'm pretty sure we don't have a Hobby Lobby, we might have a Michaels, and I know we have a Walmart, so I will check them out.
Thanks ladies! I will keep you posted, and hopefully I will have a PIP to post soon!
$50 bucks? no way. At michaels, they are VERY inexpensive. Buy your paint ther with one of those 40% off coupons, too.
And IMO, I think nursery letters are way too popular, so I'm avoiding them at all costs. I did a custom portrait of our dog instead, to go with our puppy theme!

I've been searching for a broken driftwood sign to paint "Morgan's Lagoon" on but can't find one. I broke down and got a wooden child's room sign that I'm going to distress and see if I can make it work.
We're not painting the walls in the room because we want to put the house up for sale soon, so I figured a sign was good enough and would put fewer holes in the walls
Re: Question for the crafty ladies
Why would you get them done? They are sold in so many stores. I decided I didn't want to pay more than 20. Its just wood. I can paint them myself.
And 20 is because her name is so long. I need 9 letters.

The thin letters are very reasonably priced.

I have to be honest here... I usually do crafty stuff because I want something very specific that I can't find anywhere, not because of cost.
I've painted 3 pieces of 10 x 10 wall art so far, with another 3 to go because I can't find what I'm looking for.
People say there's also a sentimental value as well, but .. i think a professional would have done a better job painting than I can LOL
this is the site that I used to get some ideas on how to make mine.
