Trying to PT, but refusing underwear. Help!

We're just starting to potty train DS. I'm pretty sure he's ready, but I'm a little nervous about this whole process (due in part to DSs language delay). I put them on him the other day for 2 hours in the afternoon, and at 1st he didn't mind at all, but after wetting a few pairs, he started to freak out about having to put on a new pair. Since then he's been pretty willing to sit on the potty, but refusing to put on underwear. Does anyone have any tips or advice for me in this situation? TIA!

    let him run around naked without any pants/ underwear at all...or just put him in pants without anything underneath. thats what I did.

    Yes This. If hes willing to sit, just let him bare butt it. You may have a few puddles but thats what PTing is about. Wink

    If he doesnt like undies...let him be free.  The amount of progection one gets from them on the 'piddling side" is negligible and on the poopies....maybe FEELING the poop sliding down his pants legs will be a good motivator.

    Sucks for Mommy though.

    We went bare bottom for the same reason. It was much easier than having an underpants battle (which you shouldn't do).  I found that after a few days of wearing pants with no undies, when he really got the PT part, he was fine with undies too. Lots of kids can't really differentiate between undies and a diaper so it can be upsetting that the pee is going everywhere.

    Glad I'm not the only one.  DS has been Pting for about 6 weeks now.  He is pretty good few accidents here and there.  Still refuses to wear underwear most of the time.  So he just goes commando (no undies).  He is speech delayed as well but has almost no problems communicating (signs and guestures and momma)  when he needs to go.  Good luck.

    Thanks for the replies. I can't deny though that I'm not too keen on letting him go bare butt. He poops up to 5 times a day and there's no way I want to deal with that all over the house. And if he is having lots of accidents I'd rather be throwing underwear in the wash then pairs of pants. Sorry, I'm just not really looking forward to it all :(

    If you are home, just let him be naked or wear lose pants with no undies.  Is he asking to use the potty on his own?  If not, than I wouldn't push it right now and revisit the whole undie thing again in a few weeks or when he starts asking to go potty.  You can also try having him wear the undies with his diaper at first to get used to them.

    FWIW, my son went from pooping 4-5 times a day to 1-2 times once we started PT.
