Poll: To cover or not to cover?

Do you use a nursing cover or blanket when nursing around people other than your DH? Why or Why not?

I do in public or with my DH's friends. I don't around my side of the family  or my friends but do most of the time around my in-laws. I do for other people's sake - not for mine! I thought I would be uncomfortable about it but I lost all sense of modesty while I was in the hospital giving birth/recovering!

Re: Poll: To cover or not to cover?

  • I did when ds was little, but now I just try to be discreet.  He never really liked having his head covered (I know I wouldn't!).

  • so far I don't BF around any of my family or DH's (they get uncomfortable) so only BF around friends and DH.  When in public so far I have used nursing rooms or the car.  I actually wish my family was more OK with it, I hate being isolated:(
  • No, never.  If someone has issues with my breasts they needn't look at them.
  • I did in the first few weeks b/c we had latch issues and I would have been exposed for a while.  I have not covered in 10 mos.  :)
  • I am usually more embarrassed about my back fat showing i.e. muffin top, than my boobage.
  • I never cover. It is way too much to juggle. I just make sure that i'm not exposed. I think I've got it down pretty well.
  • It depends on where I am, If I'm at a resturant or around DH's friends then yes, around my family, MIL, friends etc, no, and I don't always when I'm in the mall or out and about I just try to limit exposure.
  • I do around everyone but DH and my mom.

I'm just not comfortable with anyone else seeing my boobs - or part of my boobs.  I'm a pretty modest person as it is.

  • depending on when and where (and how i m dressed)... this week i ll be traveling by train w/ ds, i ll cover up there.  saturday i ll be a womens retreat, i will "underdress" w/ a nursing tank so i can be discrete.  i m not sure what i ll do when we have to go visit MIL... i ll probably cover there too (bc they make me uncomfortable and everyone just staring at my boobs will only make it weirder).
  • I use my nursing cover around everyone but dh and my mom. i'm a pretty modest person too. but there is nothing dh or my mom hasn't seen.
  • I dress in layers. I do not cover up.
  • I do, but I'm pretty modest.
  • No, but if I know I'll be out I wear a nursing tank under my shirt. I've had people come up and kiss the baby while I'm feeding him and not even realize what I am doing. I am very discreet while in public.
  • i will use my nursing cover if in public or around my fil, brothers and bils.  ds doesn't really like to have his head covered, but knows what it means when i take out the nursing cover.  yesterday, my mil was holding him and i took my nursing cover out and ds started smiling and bouncing on her lap.
  • Naaah, I've never used a cover. If I nurse in public, my shirts are usually long enough that they (and DS) cover most of my exposed flesh (which is my tummy, not my boob anyway...)

If someone has a problem, it's their problem, not mine. That being said, I usually take DS somewhere quiet to nurse anymore, as he won't concentrate if there's anything going on around him.

  • I never, ever covered her.  Most of the time, people thought she was sleeping or didn't even notice.  To me, a blanket/cover is like a huge flag - HEY, GUESS WHAT I'M DOING!!  Crazy.  The more people ee it, the more normal it will seem and the easier it will be for more shy women to nurse their babies at home or in public.  I did always make sure we were as covered as possible...my shirt was always right down to her nose almost.  You would have to try real hard to see anything.
  • I never covered but I always wear layers.  DS has always been very distractible so I can't really nurse in public - he'll stop every couple sucks just to look around.

  • I never used any kind of cover. Honestly the shirt and the baby's head is all the cover you need. I actually think it is mean to shove a blanket over their heads, how would you like to eat under a stuffy old blanket half suffocated??

If someone is offended they were either perving or they haven't grown up yet (regardless of their age). This is a classic "its them not you" case.?

  • Nope. My DD hated it and we could never keep it on. Around DH's family or some of my family I'd go into another room. I once had to nurse my DD while walking through target though. My mom was with me and reassured me that no one could see anything.
  • Nope.  He hates having his head covered and makes more of a scene if I cover him.  I dress in layers and usually have to go in another room, anyway, because he gets distracted very easily!
  • I have used a cover at a restaurant once and a few times out shopping in a ladies lounge.  I never use one with my side of the family or MIL or my friends.  I have gone to another room when FIL and BILs are over, though, or DH's friends.  I am pretty modest, I suppose, except around women I know very well.
  • I don't cover up anymore.  I've never covered up in front of my family (and that includes my brother & dad).  I just don't worry about it, and they're used to it now.  At my IL's house, it varies.  If it's just MIL and FIL there, I'll nurse in the living room, but FIL will avoid me while I do!  LOL  If my nieces are there, I'll go into another room b/c they are just too distracting for DS.

I'm fine with going into another room to nurse, especially since DS wants to see everything around him now.  It allows him to focus on the task at hand.  But I won't cover him up.  He just fights with the cover and tries to push it off, and it ends up making both of us frustrated.

  • I have never used a cover while nursing DD.  I always felt that it would draw more attention to me if I had a blanket or cover.  I nursed her in public until about 17-18 months.  She'll occasionally ask now, but I can distract her until we get home.

  • I never covered... it's not like I took my whole shirt off to nurse or anything... you can be fairly discreet and I don't think either of my kids would have appreciated their heads being covered up.
  • I do exactly what you do.

  • I don't usually cover.

  • I've done both.  It depends on what I'm wearing, etc.  I actually didn't cover w/MIL around at first, but now I do b/c she's so *curious* that she'll lean in for a closer look.  Gives me the creeps.  DD doesn't really like to be covered, so I've also just found a quiet corner where we'll get less attention so we're both comfortable.
  • I do when people are around.  Or if I'm at home and people are over I'll just go in the bedroom.  I enjoy the time alone w/ DS.
  • I do not cover.  I just pull my shirt out a bit, slip the nipple out, attach baby and pull shirt down as much as I can.  I think it's MUCH less noticeable then it would be if I covered and made a big deal out of it.
  • I usually don't cover up.  DS becomes a sweaty mess if I do, plus he usually pulls off the cover anyway.  He's so big at this point, he covers up everything I would want to hide :o)
  • I used a nursing cover when I was around other people besides my family and close friends.  My DS was a very messy eater so i did it more to have something to wipe his face with but also for some privacy.
  • I do cover when people other than family/close friends are around.

  • I used a cover in public places like the mall or a restaurant.  I didn't use a cover when I was in the backseat of my car (my clothes concealed very well).
