Is there a reason he can't get it through work or do you want more than they will provide? We found that through DH's work, he could get a 1 mil policy cheaper than online. Not true for my work, so we haven't done anything more and he'll still get a over half a million. And a million is what our lawyer recommended when we did our wills.
We just went through our Allstate agent and she shopped around for us - ended up with a good price for a 20 yr term. You might check w/ your agent just to see what they can do, like us I hope you're pleasantly surprised!
Both DH and I have ours through our work as well and I think it is a pretty good deal; plus we can get it without going through a whole assessment, which is good for us because my DH has a pre-existing heart condition so it is harder for him to get life insurance without paying through the nose.

Our companies don't provide anything more than double our salaries. DH totally underestimates how much money we need. He refuses to get more than $750K for each of us.
Group insurance (through your employer) is good up to a certain age but it is fuzzy in my mind where that cross over is. We have a policy on me with NW mutual. They are a highly rated insurance company from a claims paying ability which is very important to me. I think State Farm and NY Life are highly rated too.

I actually used to sell insurance for Farmers, so this is a "do as I say, not as I do." kind of thing. I have a couple of $100K term policies on us, but nothing big enough to cover the mortgages, etc.
The thing with life insurance is this... you should OWN your own insurance, rather than just have the stuff your work offers, since if you change jobs, you might have a lapse of time when you're not covered. That's the problem we've found ourselves in right now. We're facing about a 2 week gap when his current job ends and the new job's coverages will begin.
With the health insurance, COBRA can be applied for retroactively, but Life doesn't work that way. Thus I'm finally strong-arming him into buying our OWN life insurance instead of always relying on the work-provided stuff.

I don't have any advice, but appreciate your insight on "owning" your own insurance outside of work. Life Insurance has been on my mind a lot lately and I feel like a total slacker that DH and I only have what's offered through work right now.
I've been thinking about taking out term insurance for DH and I. We don't have a mortgage right now but DH's work only offers 1x his salary, which is peanuts. I don't have any life insurance whatsoever. So I guess we need to get going on this issue, thanks for the reminder!

Why don?t you look for life insurance quotes on Accuquote.com? It?s an aggregator website and will provide you competitive quotes from multiple carriers at the same time. It is much faster and a lot more convenient than going through individual life insurance companies.
