we give LO purees, but we give her table food and other things that she can feed herself as well.
with purees, it's easy to tell when she's swallowed them (or spit them out), but with table food it's harder. for example, i gave her some cantelope and she'd take a bite, gum it around for a bit, and then try to take another bite and come to find out (thanks to some gagging and spitting out) she didn't swallow the first bite.
also, LO has a tendency to try to shove everything and as much of everything into her mouth as possible. i have to give her puffs individually or else she'll stuff them all in her mouth at once. so my question-- do you give LO food to feed him/herself bit by bit, or do you give him/her food and let them have at it while you supervise? and when you supervise, how and when do you intervene?
TIA for any tips and hints!
Re: strange question... how do you know when LO swallows (kinda blw related)
DS has always put more than one thing in his mouth if given the option. At first we only gave him one or two things at a time for that reason, but now we'll give him several things and if he fits everything into his mouth without gagging, then he just has more to chew and maybe spit out later. We don't remove food from his mouth unless he is actually choking (which has happened once) or if he is done with his meal but still keeping something in there (like kale, which he could chew on forever).
We don't puree feed much anymore, and we've always done some of each, but when we were spoon feeding as well as chunky feeding, if we weren't sure if he had stuff in his mouth we'd make him laugh or just go "AHH" or stick our tongues out so he would do the same and we could see what was in there. Sometimes it really is quite impressive!
