reflux... wwyd

so my LO has reflux. she's 9 weeks now and she started fussing at 2 weeks... we took her to the dr and started her on zantac at 4 weeks and 4 days later she was a whole different happy baby.

for the past 5 days or so she's been throwing up about 3 times after each feeding (shes exclusively breastfed) and most of the time its right away before i even have time to burp her. i mean projectile 4 oz of milk over my shoulder and onto the furniture or floor. she's fussy during the day now and doesn't nap for more than 10 minutes at a time. the only time she sleeps or keeps anything down is at night and she only keeps it down if she falls asleep right after.

i called her dr yesterday and the nurse talked to a different dr and called me back saying he said to keep giving her the zantac but she might want to see a gastroenterologist. she called me back today after talking to her normal dr who said she's fine because she's gaining weight but to bring her back in a month to make sure she gains weight. well she's been gaining weight up to her 2 month appt but since then she's been doing this and she doesnt seem happy and it doesnt seem healthy to me. i kept saying "really?"

i dont know if her medication should be adjusted or changed or she should see a gastroenterologist but im just not comfortable with the dr's answer. i know baby's spit up, especially reflux babies but i'd like to get her to keep something down so she's not fussing and im not feeding her every hour because she has an empty stomach after throwing everything up.

should i call back and just ask to see the specialist? should i see a lactation consultant to see if maybe she's eating right? should i just insist she see her dr? or should i just let it go and do what i can until her appt in a month? what would you do?

  • At the very least I'd insist that she sees her regular doctor.  I don't know if your insurance requires you to have a referral for the specialist, but if not, you might want to make an appointment.  It can take a long time to get in to see them and you can always cancel if you see her regular doctor and things get better.

  • That doesn't seem right, and most importantly it doesn't feel right to you.  Take LO in to the doc, and the specialist if you think that's right.  I would prefer to go & have nothing be wrong as opposed to constantly wondering & worrying that something is wrong & should I be doing something??
  • When we switched from zantac to prevacid we noticed a huge difference. You should ask her about that before going to a GI dr.

  • I would definitely have a problem with this and I would insist upon an appointment. I'm pretty sure I remember my pedi saying the dosage of LO's medicine should change as she continues to put on weight. Basically what works at 10 pounds doesn't work ad well at 18. And add to the situation a lack of good sleep I would be concerned too.

    This!

Also, have you tried looking at your diet?  If she's EBF, maybe it's something you've started to eat that is bothering your LO?

  • thank you everyone! i called and insisted on going in this afternoon. at the appointment i fed her and she threw up a lot in front of the dr so she knows what im talking about. im taking her for an ultrasound tomorrow of her tummy and if nothing's wrong the dr's gonna try prevacid or prilosec instead of zantac.

    thanks for the backup!

  • We used Zantac for about a month and then it stopped working, we went to the pedi and she said we would try one other medication before sending us to a specialist.  She prescribed Prevacid and now that's working great (even better than the Zantac)... Maybe you could ask about this before having to see a specialist.
