Oh..my friend has twins..you should call/email her!

Maybe I am hormonal lately.  But this bugs the CRAP out of me!!! 3 different people now have said..."I have a friend with twins...here is her email or you should call her!"

That just seems odd to me!  First of all, I have a full time job, a husband who travels every week and a 2 1/2 year old.  I have no time for calling / meeting with random people.  Second, there is this great invention called the Internet!!  I chat with TONS of GREAT MoM's every day and get priceless advice from lots of different experiences and situations.  Why would getting the opinion of just one person be more helpful than the opinions of many?  Than if I didn't do something like that person, I would feel judged or something.

What am I supposed to say to this?  So far I just say "oh, thats nice" and brush it off. OH - and I even got "my friend is very passionate about breastfeeding.  You should call her for advice"  (note that this certain friend does NOT have twins!)

WTF?  Am I just hormonal?  I know they are just trying to help, but I think it is stupid.

Re: Oh..my friend has twins..you should call/email her!

  • I get lots of "oh so and so have twins, they are 35 years old now, you should call them".

I should call the mom or the twins?!?!  Will the adult twins tell me what they were thinking as baby twins?  cuz you know, all twins are exactly the same.

  • I feel the same way as far as being hormonal. I don't love a ton of attention normally so when I'm pregnant I really have to bite my tongue a lot. I dread going out sometimes, just because I hate being asked a ton of questions, etc. Some people say "get used to it" but I never will because I just don't like it. I already think about after I have them and all of the randoms that I'll have to deal with....yay! not.
  • I really dislike any advice that I didn't ask for. I've gotten the, "Oh, I have a friend who has twins.  You should call her!".  I'm always thinking "Why, I all ready have three friends who've had twins, I think I'll stick to them."

I get really irritated when people offer me a glass of wine, and I decline, and then they say, "You know wine is actually good for the babies."  Then someone usually adds, "Just think of all the things our moms did when they were pregnant with us." Ummmm . . . first of all, my body & my babies = my choice, and second of all, my mom didn't drink or smoke when she was pregnant with me.  We've also made quite a few advances since the early 70's so I think I'll stick to the most current advice.

    Argh!!

Ugh - my mom & MIL are the worst at that!!  Yeah - quite a few things have changed...but thanks for your pushy and outdated advice!!

  • Ahhh I know - we get this too. I'm already so tired of the unsolicited advice. I didn't feel it this much with my first one. But when people find out it's twins they have to give all sorts of unsolicited advice and they don't even have experience with twins 99% of the time! (The twin moms I actually do enjoy talking to and picking their brains!!).

In the case of your question, I usually just brush it off with a "Oh thanks, I'll get in touch if I have a question my doctor or the internet can't answer."

  • Actually, if these people are local and have young twins, it might be really nice to be able to meet, IRL, other twin moms.  I am really grateful for the one person I've had a playdate with who has twins, and if someone had just handed me her name and number, we might have been able to meet sooner.
