MMR or Chickenpox vaccine reaction?

Fin got his MMR and Chickenpox vaccines last monday. He's been teething pretty hardcore since then as well.  This Sunday night/Monday morning he woke up at 4am with a temp of 101.4 (in armpit though). I've been giving him tylenol and ibuprofen which seems to help and bring the temp down, but when it wears off the temp comes back.

We're on day three today of a fever, and today it was 102.1 (rectal). Could this be a reaction from the vaccine, even though he didn't get any rash, or from teething (although last time, the dr said teething shouldn't cause a temp this high), or should I call the doctor? His only symptom besides the fever is his extreme grumpiness :)

Re: MMR or Chickenpox vaccine reaction?

  • I guess it wouldn't hurt to call (the pedi) and report his symptoms. A call doesn't cost a thing.

FWIW - our pedi has also said that teething does not/will not manifest in a temp; but, from experience (whether coincidence or not), it usually did for J...along with a few other "symptoms," which I always swore had to be OWT's, until we experienced them, firsthand.

  • I did MMR and chicken pox separate (ds seems to have bad reactions so we split them up)
We had absolutely no reaction to MMR... But chicken pox has by far been the worst reaction.. he had a high temp (103) for 36 straight hours, rapid heartbeat and was very lethargic.. It was awful. Our pedi told us she has a lot of similar reactions to the chickenpox vax as we did. So I would think this is vax related..
I totally agree with all the things that happen with teething that are considered OWT or "coincidences" ... I found far too often DS would have a low gradebfever, loose stools, etc and I just knew it was a result of teething.

  • Was it 2 days ago, Monday, or last Monday, Valentine's Day?  If it was over a week ago, I don't think it's a reaction to the vaccine.

Tyler has been running an on and off fever, with no other real symptoms, for 2 days now.  I took him to the doctor yesterday because he is already on antibiotics, so I was concerned.  The doctor looked him over really well and basically said he thought it was viral, but that I should definitely call back if the fever persisted for 3 days or spiked up really high.  In your case, I'd say since you're on the 3rd day of fever, you should call.  I really doubt it's a reaction to the vaccine, but a fever that lasts 3 days warrants a call in my opinion.

  • I would probably call the pedi. With so much going around, he could have strep, or maybe even an ear infection? His grumpiness along with the fever is why I would call.

  • You can get a fever and/or rash from MMR up to 2 weeks after the shot. It is a total pain in the butt shot. Audrey ever got fevers from vaccines except that one and it just kept coming back. It was fierce. I remember it well bc we were traveling to IL and they both had the fever reaction to the shot at the same time.
  • DD has run a low fever with teething, so far only with her molars though and it was only about 99.9.  She did have quite a reaction to the varicella vaccine.  She had a fever around 100, her injection site got bright red and then she broke out in a rash.  She kept getting spots for a couple weeks and it eventually went away.  I would call the pedi just to get their opinion, but it may be a reaction to the varicella vaccine which is pretty common.
