"Let Down" question

First, I will say that my supply is great.  I pump 6-10 ounces 3 times a day at work and Asher is always satified once he eats.  My issue is let down.

It seems like it is taking longer and longer for me to letdown when he starts nursing (I never have issues with let down when pumping).  Once it does happen the flow seems to be fine for him.  It used to be a problem during the last feeding of the day. This morning I tried to feed him before work and he started getting mad because there was no letdown so I ended up starting with the pump then latching him on.  So frickin' annoying.  I have tried taking a few deep breaths, drinking water while he starts to nurse and nothing really seems to speed up the process.  Now that I am starting to think about it I am sure it will get worse because it's causing me a bit of stress...so counterproductive! Grr.

Thoughts?

  • I am no help, I am interested to see the answer.

I have never felt a let down ever... so I cant help... I just know she is getting milk because of the way she sucks

  • Are you sure he is getting frustrated/antsy because of a slow letdown? I ask because W has been SO distracted, while nursing, within the last month or so. I'm assuming it has less to do with my letdown (because mine is almost instantaneous, regardless of whether I'm BF'ing or pumping) and more to do (presumably) with developmental age. Sometimes, even covering him with a blanket (to minimize distractions) doesn't work. It can get annoying, as it makes for really.freaking.long nursing sessions. I hope this phase doesn't last forever.

He isn't distracted.  He will literally suck for a full minute and nothing will come out.  I can feel when milk actually starts to flow.  When it actually starts to come out the flow is fine, not to fast or slow for him.  It's just a matter of getting it to come out.  I feel like it's a weird problem.

Gotcha. Hmmm...that does seem odd. Have you called the Babykind LC's?

  • for me i know the more often N nurses the harder it is for a letdown but its usually pretty instant with me. he doesnt get frustrated though because he is always distracted anyway

You might be onto something there.  It does get harder the more he nurses.  And really he doesn't get too mad, most of the time I could distract him and try 15 minutes later.  He enjoys eating hist fist most of the time....  It's not like he is screaming.  I think the frustration is mine.  I know he wants to nurse and nothing is coming out.  Maybe I should just relax.. Ha!  In the morning for work I really don't have time to wait and try again, I should try nursing him earlier (not right before we run out the door).
