Burping trouble: newborn

I have a 6 day old who I am having trouble burping. Any tips, I can only get him to burp like twice a day, at night he is gassy and really ticked off and Im sure its because of the burping issue.

Also, he is spitting up like crazy, so if there is no burp there goes all the BM or formula.

Any tips would be appreciated, TIA

    The nurse in the hospital told me that BF babies don't usually get as much air and may not burp at every feeding.

    Ellie has always spit up alot, even if she burps. Have you tried laying him flat and bicycling his legs? This helped with my niece and Ellie when they got bad gas pains.

    Maybe you can try using Mylicon?  Also, try changing positions and concentrate the patting on the baby's left side (your right if the baby is facing you over your shoulder).

    I'm having the same problem - my 12 day old rarely burps. Plus whatever position I put her in to burp her, she falls asleep! My LC is coming later today so I'm going to ask her and will report back...

    I used to sit on a labor/yoga ball and bounce while holding my LO to my chest and supporting his head. It seemed to help the burps come up better than patting his back

    He might have reflux. Keep him upright for a little bit after each feeding, so the best way to burp him and keep him upright at the same time is putting him over your shoulder. Make sure his belly is just under the end of your shoulder so it gets a little pressure on it for the air to come out. If he is sleeping flat, find a way for him to sleep a little sitted to keep him from spitting up.

    Following up from my post above...just met with my LC. She tried burping LO and was surprised to see that she did in fact fall asleep when being burped. She said it wasn't a big deal if she doesn't burp, however she's not having the same gas and spitup problems you're having so it's probably more important for your LO to burp. Sorry not too helpful for your situation I know...

    My LO sometimes takes forever to burp.  My LC also said BF babies don't always need to burp, but keep at it.  There might be one that takes 5 or so minutes to come up! (At least my guy sometimes has those). I usually burp him seated on my lap, bent at the belly. I put a little pressure on his tummy with my left hand and pat his back with my right.

    My LC also said the carseat helps push out gas (or anything else shaped like that, a swing, cradle, ect...) She recommended trying to burp LO after he'd been in the seat for 10-15 minutes.
