Minnesota Babies

Recommend your CSA please!

We are ready to sign up for our CSA (community supported agriculture/crop share) for the year, and would like to try a new place this time around. We weren't overly thrilled with our last selection- it was a reasonable price but a small farm that was unfortunately hit with a lot of rainy weather last year...anyway, if you have a CSA that you love, please let me know! Thanks!

  • I don't have one but kind of want to join this year. Where can I get information about them?

I'm also looking into signing up for one, would you be willing to share which one you weren't thrilled with?

  • We weren't thrilled with Two Gals CSA- it was way too much lettuce/salad mixture and not enough of the other veggies. But, it was pretty affordable compared to some ($350) My good friend did the Harmony Valley (every other week share) which is almost double the price, but I think you get what you pay for. They have a larger farm so weather doesn't seem to have as much of an impact as Two Gals' smaller farm. We may just sign up for HV, they have a drop off site close to our home. Here's the website:

I will vehemently disagree with the "you get what you pay for" with HVF. We did them last year, and I've never felt like something was as big of a waste of money as that was. They were AWFUL.

  • That is disappointing. My friend/coworker showed me what she got every week and it was waaay more than we ever got! And the share went from May-Dec (vs ours from May-Sep) This is the reason I posted, however, to see what other options were out there.

  • We love Treasured Haven Farm (treasuredhavenfarm.com). Reasonable pricing and flexible options for box sizes and delivery. And they are very welcoming for farm visits, camping, hiking, etc.

Really? Why do you say that? Just curious. I had a friend who did them 2 years ago and loved it. They were very impressed with the selection and different veggies they got. We were thinking of splitting one with them this year so I'd like to hear why you didn't like it.

This is what I wrote in the CSA post on the nest board:

we had Harmony Valley last summer, and it was the single biggest waste of money we've ever spent. They were AWFUL. Our salads would wilt within 24 hours, we had raspberries come moldy, a watermelon come that had a huge crack and chunk taken out of it, most of our veggies went bad before Sunday dinner rolled around (our pick up was Thursday night). We threw out more than we ate, it was HORRIBLE.

Needless to say, we won't be using them again. In fact, the whole experience has really turned us off of CSA's in general. We're going to just make it a priority to get to the farmer's market every weekend this summer.

  • I just signed up for my 4th year with Driftless Organics and have had a great experience with them.

  • That's the one we decided to go with this year, so I'm really happy to see this! I can't wait 'til June!
