Success after IF

boycotting children's place

I'm not a big fan of their clothes to begin with. anyway, I bought a pair of jeans for $8.78 and they fit ginny terribly -- of course. chunky legs and butt are very hard to fit in denim.

with my receipt in hand and pants (with all the tags) I went back a week later to do a return. I couldn't believe what the sales girl asked me -

give my full name, phone number, mailing address AND email address. I was shocked and appalled by the overkill of information I had to provide. I told the girl that I thought it was absurd, insulting and completely unnecessary to ask for all that private info. I had the receipt and the unworn pants! the girl said she had to make sure it was a... "legit return." you're joking right?! I wasn't returning $300 worth of crap with no receipt. the pants are $8.78! I'm never shopping there again. oy...

  • I bought some baby socks there and found out that they were on sale if you bought more (like a deal on 3 packs and I bought 2) so I wanted to return and buy the 3 packs (which would be less $ than the 2 packs) and they pitched a FIT for unopened, unused, receipt in hand return. I've never heard so much huffing and puffing.

nope. the charge was on my amex.

  • So annoying> I don't really like the Childrens Place either..

BUt I had the same thing happen at J.Crew as well. My MIL sent me some pants for valentines day..she didn't send the reciept..They didn't fit and I don't really need kackies anyway. Well the gave me the HARDEST time about returning them (with the Tags on and everything)..I had to get a manager to help me..it was really terrible. I usually LOVE J.Crew, I have been shopping there for years. But this seriously made me mad and makes me NOT want to boycott the store for a bit!

  • That's insane.  I can't believe they did that.  Whenever I've bought anything with them, they ask for that information and I refuse to provide it.
  • I had to do this at Michael's (craft store) for a $1.99 return.  =/

After 2 rounds of IVF & 2 rounds of FET, we were blessed with identical twin girls!

  • from what I gather, customers try all kinds of shady stuff to get over on the stores so now they are being held accountable for the amount of returns and are required to get all this info to track how many times a customer returns....sucks big time..I usually never give my info even when they ask while just purchasing...

  • I hear ya! I returned a few things there (2 sleepers and 2 pairs of jeans because they didn't fit DD) and it took me forever! DH and DD were with me, and I figured it'd be a 5 minute thing since I had the receipt. They asked for everything but my blood type. DH is a retail manager and he was shaking his head the whole time.

I definitely don't like their clothes enough to shop there anymore... it's too much work!

I work at Michaels and the only time we ask for that information is for a cash refund. We don't ask for it on credit/debit cards. I don't know why but it is required for us to obtain it (although no email adress is needed). I know it is kind of strange but that is a corporate policy like I am sure it is at Children's Place.

  • I can understand them asking for your name because you have to sign for a return but your email address? Come on! WHen you purchase in their they ask for your email as well and I don't give it to them.

I would be the smart a$$ who put down Jane Smith 123 Main Street Yoville, USA and my phone number has 555 555 5555 than I would put my email as janesmith@aol.com

  • FWIW.... I just decline to give that info out and never have a problem. They're just collecting it for marketing purposes but don't want to admit it to u.
Our IF journey: 1 m/c, 1 IVF with only 3 eggs retrieved yielding Dylan and a lost twin, 1 shocker unmedicated BFP resulting in Jace, 3 more unmedicated pregnancies ending in more losses.
Total score: 6 pregnancies, 5 losses, 2 amazing blessings that I'm thankful for every single day.

That's a crock-o-krap. I would.have had a manager in front of me and witching loud enough that potential customers walking by could hear me.

  • It certainly is a pain, I am not debating that. But I think they do it to cut down on bogus returns. I have seen tv specials on people who will dig a reciept out of the trash and then go into the store, steal that item, and return it. I would rather give out that info and keep costs down than have to pay more. Email address seems a little absurd though.

nope. the charge was on my amex.

Then it's terrible that they were such PITA's.  Worked retail for YEARS and cash returns are a great way for associates to steal from the store (they "fake" a cash return and pocket the cash).  So, sometimes new or overzealous associates will be very adamant to customers about information so their manager can follow up if needed and ensure the transaction actually took place.

Credit cards are easy to verify because you can see it was put back on the same card, thus little to no chance for employee fraud.  It's a typical practice to gain information from customers, but we had customers refuse to give us information and the goal was to graciously encourage them to do so.  It never included email addresses, but we did request your name, address and telephone number.  If it was a cash return, we specified in our policy that you present photo ID.  However, if a customer refuses a manager could over-ride it.

Sorry you had such a sucky experience.  Sounds like the cashier needs a lesson in understanding the big picture (info is NOT worth losing a customer)

funny you say Target b/c 1 time dh & I & one of my best friends were by Target and she asked dh if he could go in and return something for her b/c she has already "returned the max amount for that year"    Don't know whats crazier, my friend or the # of times you can return something, LOL!

I agree with you here about the cash refunds. That is I am sure why we require the info on cash refunds at Michaels. However the fact that it was a credit card return that confuses me.

That being said at Michaels, if someone refuses information (such a phone number....which happens a lot) we just write "customer refused #" on our form. Sadly there are a lot of people out there who are not honest and make stores have these policies.

  • I think it's corporate policy at many stores. I generally decline to give that info when checking out, but when returning an item I just fill it out -- it's not worth the argument to me. I think your bad experience was the fault of that particular cashier and not necessarily the store itself.

  • I rarely, if ever, use real information.

i also REFUSE to give my phone number or show more than the signature line on my drivers license for a credit card purchase. I have been known to call a corporate number at the register if they insist on recording my DL numbers...

  • I definitely get that stores are getting scammed, but that is really annoying.  It's gotten to the point where I hate to return/exchange things, even though I'm returning for legitimate reasons.
