Wanting to buy a new camera..suggestions??

My DH and I really want to get a new camera before our baby arrives!! We would really like a nice one that takes awesome pictures (since thats what we will most likely be doing for the next 1+yrs of our lives ha).  Currently we have a sony cybershot and i DISLIKE it VERY MUCH.. We have been looking at some nikons or cannons, but i am just not sure!! does anyone have any they fell in love with or heard good things about?  TIA!! :)

  • We got a Canon Rebel T2i for ourselves for Christmas and I love it!  It takes great pictures and you can use it as both a point and shoot or you can use all of the cool features to get great photos with settings.  Love it!

  • i have a nikon d90, which is very easy to use and takes awesome pictures.  i'm really excited about being able to take baby pictures with it for baby #2, since i had to use my cannon powershot for baby #1 and the pictures were, well, what you'd expect...  i really want to be able to capture how beautiful a newborn is this time.

  • I would recommend a Canon Rebel with the kit lens 18-55mm.  You could even get the past model for less if budget is an issue.  Another lens that is nice to have is the 50/1.8 - you can find that for less than $100.  I am assuming you want an SLR?  I have a Sony Cybershot as my pocket camera and I love it.  What don't you like about it?  If it's the shutter lag (time in-between taking photos) then the only solution is an SLR camera.

  • If you are looking for an SLR camera, try the Nikon D3000/5000. I have the D5000 and it takes awsome pictures and very easy transition from a regular point and shoot camera.

  • If you arent prepared to shoot in Manual mode and learn about aperature and shutter speed to properly use the fancy lenses, then an SLR isnt for you. The auto camera functions on the DSLRS are similar to the Auto functions on advanced point and shoots.

I recommend getting a larger, advanced point and shoot that will take great photos, has a really good optical zoom and also has a manual mode, so you can start learning the settings before you go out and purchase a hugely expensive DSLR....

Price wise, you'll save around $250 at the very least - not counting extra lenses, tripod, etc.

I would check out the Canon Powershot Line...

  • We had a Sony Cybershot.  The lens broke and we bought a Canon Power Shot.  We do NOT like it, so I would avoid that one.  We're also in the market for a new camera so thanks for posting!
  • I've always been a Canon girl.  I have a Canon XT - old school DSLR.  I would love a Ti1 or Ti2 but can't afford one right now.  Eventually though that's what I plan to get.

I will say though that the lens that comes with the kits (18-55mm) suck.  If you get a Canon DSLR get the body only and then another, better, lens.  Such as the 50mm 1.8 - available on Amazon for about $100.

  • I recently got a Canon Rebel XS and I love it!  I got the kit lens and a 50mm lens, and have been using both as I learn to use the camera.  It takes beautiful pictures, and as I'm learning to use the settings a bit better, the pics are getting better :)

boooo... I loved my Cannon PowerShot S3! It was my camera before I got my dSLR Anyways, I now have a Pentax KX DSLR - I love it, and they price was pretty good for an entry level dSLR, but there is a downside - books and info are more difficult to find than the Canon or the Nikon dSLRs and from what I can tell, additional lenses and equipment do cost more than the generic lenses for the Canons and Nikons....
  • I hated our sony cybershot and we regret not getting a new one before we had DD b/c so many of her first pictures were very blurry. We love our Canon-can't remember which one it is but it's one of the newer ones with a touch screen. Love the features and takes great photos! Worth spending a little bit more on. I know Nikon is great too! GL
