Any medical coders on the board?

I have been looking into future careers for when my son (who is 7 months old) starts school.  I am a planner, and wanted to figure this out now while I have time to get a degree.  I was a social work major in college, who ended up working an IT/office job for 11 years before becoming a licensed daycare provider.  Once my little guy is in school, I won't be doing daycare anymore.

I was looking for WAH jobs and stumbled across medical coding.  After doing a ton of research, I see that WAH coding jobs are extremely hard to find, and that you need several years of experience in a professional setting before anyone will consider you.  Even so, the job sounds really interesting and I have decided to start taking classes toward the RHIT this Summer.  I'm hoping I can find a night job or internship to get experience and still be with LO during the day.

Now that I've given my life story, I was just wondering if anyone else does this type of work.  What degree(s) did you decide to get?  Do you like it?  Does anyone do this remotely?  I'd appreciate any info I can get.

  • I have no real advice, but my aunt just started doing this as her work-from-home retirement suppliment job. She loves it and makes great $$. But I can't help you more than that. Good luck!
