2nd Trimester

Second time+ mommas, a quick question.

I'm not there yet, obviously, but I was thinking about this last night.

They say if this isn't your first baby, you typically feel fetal movement a lot earlier.  I'm wondering, was your DH/SO or anyone else able to feel fetal movement on the outside earlier as well?

  • i felt evan at 24 weeks. this prengancy at 14 weeks!

  • Well, this time around I felt flutters at 14 weeks, 16 weeks with my first pregnancy.  I have not felt the baby from the outside yet and I don't remember when I did with my first.  This baby is crazy already though, just like my daughter.

  • I'm the opposite. I can't remember exactly when I starting feeling our daughter (1st one) but w/ this second pregnancy, I didn't feel movement on the outside until 21 weeks. I started to panic a little bit, but at every ultrasound she was moving like crazy so maybe I just had an extra layer of "cushion" she had to kick through. lol.

  • Definitely was not the case for me, but I do have an anterior placenta this time around.  I will say though, once I started feeling really strong movement, then DH was able to feel it as well--whereas with DD, I felt her for a long time before he was every able to.

  • I felt DD#1 around 20 weeks and DH felt her around 24 weeks. With DD#2 I felt her around 16 weeks and DH felt her move very lightly though around 18 weeks.

  • i started feeling him for sure around 14-16 weeks, and DH really only could feel him at 20ish+ weeks. I think it makes sense that we can feel the baby sooner this time, since we know what it feels like and the baby is actually inside us, but I'm not sure why DH would be able to feel sooner unless maybe you were thinner now or something.

  • Not true for me...I felt movement at 16 weeks last pregnancy and this time I've yet to feel anything at all!

  • Definitly felt the baby sooner this time around but no, my husband was not able to any sooner.  In fact, I'm 22 weeks and he hasn't felt him yet :)

I don't entirely believe that's the only reason, though.  I wonder if, since your uterus has already been stretched from carrying a baby previously, if the muscle gives more readily to fetal movement and that makes it easier to feel, does that make any sense?  I know I'm not the only one that's skeptical of "we know what it feels like"  being the only reason second+ time moms feel fetal movement sometimes 2 months earlier than their first pregnancy.

Anyway, I'm rambling.  Thanks for the responses, everyone!
