2+ moms - How much clothing do you need?

I have a friend who came over with about 5 bags of clothing ranging from newborn to 24m.  She said depending on how big our baby is, we might not need a lot of newborn clothes and go right to 0-3m.  Realistically, how many onesies/outfits do we need for newborn, 0-3m, 3-6m so I'm not laundering clothes daily?

In each size I'd go for:

10-12 t-shirts or onesies and maybe 6 pants and 6-8 sleeper/gown type things. One or two sweaters is fine for summer, but honestly most babies spend the day wrapped in blankets anyway so you shouldn't need them in summer. Footed pants are better than pants and socks for every little babies since the socks tend to slip off, also look for fold over sleeves on sleepwear -- they are better than the no scratch mittens. You might want a few "outfits" but you should need them much in the first few weeks.

For winter you'll want some sort of shower cap cover for the car seat and bunting for walks (don't use bunting in the car seat, it can compress and the baby can pop out in an accident).

If you'll use bottles at all (either with formula or milk) you'll want bibs as well. Bottles are pretty messy in the first few months.

I couldn't agree more with this.  We had DD in winter, so needed more clothing for her.  We're not planning on buying too much for the new baby since it'll be summer and he'll be good to go with just a onesie and a blanket in the beginning!

  • i think it totally depends on what you'll be doing after the baby is here. if they're going to daycare everyday i'd say you'd need a lot more than if you're going to be sahm.obviously if they're going to daycare you need to dress them everyday and have spare clothes on hand. after being a working mom, turned to sahm, there was no reason to get fully dressed up in more than a onesie, unless i was going grocery shopping, or taking the kids somewhere fun.

as far as onesies are concerned, i agree with pp, at least 10 onesies up to 15. but i also believe you can never have too many of those! i had a hard time finding footed pants. i could only find regular pants but that was ok with me. i'd say at least 4-6 pair. 5-6 pairs of jammies. lots of bibs! especially when they start drooling. i'd go thru 2-3 bibs a day.

you may not WANT to do laundry all that often, but reality is with diaper blowouts, messy bottles, droolers etc you will probably end up doing it more than you might have imagined lol

  • Get a bunch of those zip up sleep sacs.  Those are amazing!  I swear I never took my daughter out of pajamas for about the first four months of her life.  Way too hard and impractical to dress a newborn all cutesy.  They poop/pee/spit up too much.

  • Thank you to everyone who responded!! This gives me a much better understanding of what we have now compared to what we need.  I think I may need a couple more sleepers, but other than that we are set!  I cannot thank my friend enough for all of these clothes, and the best part was her son was born June 15th so all the seasons match!!  She even brought over his first Halloween, Christmas and Valentine's Day outfits.  SO CUTE!!

  • You won't need many newborn things.  I bought only a couple (went right to 0-3 months) and she didn't wear them all.  She spent all of her time in sleepers and onesies and didn't use the really cute outfits I planned for her.  It may also be good to buy as needed for the extras...DD has so many clothes that she never even wore, or wore once.  I'm trying to cut back with DS's clothes because I went overboard with the first.

  • Agreed.  First few months = onesies, gowns with fold over mits, sleep and plays.  Socks fall off and get lost.  Cute outfits are fun but some what of a waste for the beginning b/c of diaper blow outs (yep, prepare yourself) and spit up.  I would say you could go through 3 outfit changes in a day depending on diaper issues and spit up, plus gowns for bed time.  I used several flannel receiving blankets a day as well, but my babies were colder weather, so not sure how that or hats will come into play in June.

I try to avoid anything to complicated or uncomfortable in the early months especially.  You are going to be sleep deprived and not really going to want to figure out 20 tiny buttons or fuss with overly stiff or starched fabrics.

This! DD didn't wear an "outfit" till about 3 months. My DH thought babies only needed a few  clothing items and after one night of 3 pj changes he changed his mind. I just love a soft pair of footed pj's (carters are my favorite) or a gown-those are great for the night changes!  Just don't go to crazy I know the outfits are sooo cute and fun but between gifts and the baby shower even I got enough for LO and I have a small family!

  • I wouldnt get too much in the newborn size or the 5-8lb size. I have about 7 nb sleepers and the same in onesies. For the 0-3 month (8-12lb), you could do like 14 of each piece which would last at most two weeks, depending on how many poop blowputs you have. I have 13, 0-3 gowns with the fold over mittens (which is a MUST) and waay too many 0-3/3m onesies. Jacob was born at the end of July so it was hot as hell, so I dont have hardly any pants, so I may need a few since BB will probably be born at the end of May.

As for the 5 bags of clothes, I have probably 8 space bags full of clothes from Jacob ranging from nb to 18m, but IDK if that is overboard or not. My mom gets an obscene (sp?) amount of clothes for them.
