I have posted a couple times about our problems BFing. Last week, our LC referred us to a feeding disorder specialist because she felt as if she wasn't able to further help us. A has not been able to latch, although he takes a bottle like a champ.
Today we found out that anatomically, all is well. However, he doesn't extend his tongue very far when nursing, and is therefore unable to latch correctly. When we use the nipple shield, his incorrect latch actually creates a suction that stops my milk flow. The reason he takes a bottle so well is because the nipple is a lot longer so he doesn't have to work as hard. The specialist gave us a couple exercises to do with our fingers to help him learn to extend his tongue. Unfortunately, he said that he sees cases like this frequently and that after a couple weeks of exercises, if he hasn't learned to extend his tongue, he just won't, and we'll have to end up EPing.
To anyone that made it this far, thanks. I've appreciated being able to vent and get support every time I was ready to give up BFing for good. :-)
Re: Saw a feeding disorder specialist today
Good for you for digging deeper into the problem. I love BFing, but I HATED pumping because I wasn't able to keep up and had to supplement with DS. At the same time that I was struggling, I had a friend who could pump 2x a day and feed a family of 5. Not fair!
Good luck with whatever decision you make!
