Updating FB during labor?

OMG -

A childhood friend of mine has been actively updating her facebook since yesterday when her water broke... everything from the trip to the hospital to each cm dilated and even a "took a break from pushing, Matt can see her head!"

So weird.  This is NOT something I plan on doing during labor - I think my DH would freak if I was updating FB every second!  LOL

Re: Updating FB during labor?

  • Um, my iPhone/Facebook will be the LAST thing on my mind when I go into labor. That is just crazy! No offense, but is she starving for attention or what? Gesh!

My DH would be a little annoyed and ticked off if I focused more on my Facebook than the labor! That is just nuts.

  • I find that a little weird. The "Matt can see her head" part was just wayyyyy overboard!!!

A good idea to update people during labor come from my best friends mom. Her mom had created a twitter account and only told specific people about it, and while my friend was in labor her mom would update the twitter account with little things like "Emily checked into the hospital", or "Emily is resting now and doing well" which kept all the phone calls at bay but still helped people know that she was doing fine and things were progressing. She NEVER updated with TMI things like "Pushing" or "can see head!!" she instead put more subtle things like "Baby is almost here, doctor says maybe in the next 20 minutes..." and then finally updated with time and weight and name baby.

    Just food for thought.

  • Nothing will hit Facebook until baby has arrived. This has been decided as DH's grandfather is on Facebook and we do not plan on calling his grandparents until the next day...

His Grandmother is notorious for finding her way into the delivery room, even when she is told to get out....Needless to say his mom recommended that we not tell them until after the baby has arrived. She said her mom stressed her out sooo bad and would like us to be able to enjoy it the way we want to...

  • Lol! So crazy! That was just like last week's "One Born Every Minute". The teenage girl on there updated her facebook status constantly! Her parents said one month she had over 35,000 texts! Out of control. Yeah, definitely know facebook updating when I am in labor. I think I'd rather try to get some sleep, if I can!!

  • Absolutely not.  I rarely update my facebook as it is and the last people I'll be thinking about when giving birth are my long lost "friends" on facebook.

  • Yeah, I've seen that happen a few times, as recently as a couple of weeks ago. Some of my friends updated to the point of me knowing when they were pushing and how dilated they were. I will never make my cervix the topic of conversation on Facebook, but to each their own, I guess.

  • I will probably not put anything on FB until we get home. I don't want people on there taking it as an invitation to come see me at the hospital. Yes, I want visitors a couple hours after baby arrives, but just close friends and family. Everyone else can wait until another day.

  • This is just crazy.  I think it's ignorant towards the doctor and nurses.  They need you focused and rested and you're facebooking, rude!  Pretty soon cell phones are going to be banned in delivery rooms, as they should be, IMO.  I can see a post of "we are on our way to the hospital", but then a play-by-play is totally overboard.  I will not post on FB until our whole family knows LO is here.  My family would choke me dead if they found out via FB.
  • OMG is right!  I will  not even be touching my phone during labor.  I must admit though, that my hubby is way more into FB than I am and updates way more.  I hope he doesn't plan on updating that much. :l

During actual delivery, cell phones/cameras aren't even aloud at my hospital.  So I'm surprised she was even able to update.

  • My plan is not to tell ANYONE that I am in labor. Only DH, my Doula and Midwife will know... and once baby is here then we will make the calls to Family members and then later (once things settle) we will make a FB status update (Most of all our family is on there).

  • That is just nuts. I will update facebook but probably once we are home from the hospital.

  • Um, to each his or her own, but I will not be anywhere near Facebook, Twitter, email or even my phone during my labor and delivery.  Some things are not for public comment.  To me, the birth experience should be personal - something you share with those closest to you and medical professionals.  Geesh!
  • I could see DH doing this so I warned him not to.  The play by play posts annoy me.  I told him he can post on his FB and mine once the baby is born.

That last part is a little much! I can't imagine myself updating during labor...but I also don't have internet on my phone currently.

  • you all have just given me an idea!

i'll be going in for a repeat c-section, maybe i'll have dh update from surgery

"mom prepped and laying on table"

    "doc just took first slice!"

    "amniotic fluid gushes!"

seriously... put the effing phone down. no one cares THAT much on facebook. everyone just wants to see pics after the baby is out and all cleaned up.

i updated fb with my last baby, but that was at night after my c section was done in the am. i took a pic of her and announced her.

  • The head parts is all sorts of wrong!  I don't plan on posting anything until we're home.  The important people (close friends and family) will all know through the grapevine - I don't need it broadcasted on FB until I'm ready to share with the people I'm "friends" with on FB that I haven't seen in 11 years!
  • I will admit I'm a big FB person, but with DD all I updated with was going to the hospital and then like the next day sometime I said she was here and her stats. Birth is such a private thing to me. I text my friends and family to let them know a little more and sent friends pictures the next morning, but no FB.

  • My sister did text with me during the early parts of her labor since I couldn't be there, and to keep her occupied.  But once things started happening I just got 1 call from my mom to let me know that she was pushing.  But that wasn't on FB for everyone to see.
