Full term before first internal?

When did you ladies have your first internal?

My doctor had originally said that I would be getting my first internal yesterday, he didn't do it and said he would at the next appointment. At my next appointment I'll be 37 weeks. Did anyone else not get an internal until they hit 37 weeks?

I got mine at 36 weeks, at 37 it was skipped.

I go in today for my 38 week appointment, but I'm not sure if I'm getting one done or not. I am assuming yes, but I'm not sure.

The last dr I saw said I might get one this week- I'll be one day before 37 weeks. She said that she prefers not to do them before 38 because they can be uncomfortable and really don't change anything they would do (if you're at a 0 or a 2.) She said it depends what dr I see, but she would do it if I wanted. I am seeing someone else this week, so we'll see! I did have a friend who went for her reg. apt and was 5cm. The next day she went back and was 7, still without contractions. She had her baby that night! I know that is very rare, but I always think about that and am just curious to know if I'm dialated at all.

My first one will be tomorrow, and I will be 38 weeks! It depends on the OB. My sister had her first one done at 37 weeks, but her OB is different than mine (same team of OBs though).

My doc says before 37 weeks doesn't mean anything. Which I guess is true because you can walk around for weeks dilated and effaced. So I'll be 37 weeks 4 days for my first.

I had one at 36 weeks when they did the GBS test, but did not have one at 37 or 38 weeks. The doctor said they'll do the next one at 39 weeks.

I get my first tomorrow at just over 36 weeks. The Dr. I saw the week before that wanted to do one last week, but my actual OB said no. Each office is different, but I think 39 weeks is too late to start doing them. Maybe the only reason they are waiting so long is because internals can actually put you into labor.

I am 37 weeks and have not had one yet. I go for my next appointment on Friday. My Dr didn't say that he was going to do one then, but you never know.

I was on the fence about when I wanted to do them this time (I think I waited until 38 or 39w with DS), but will probably wait until my 40w appointment if I get to that point and then have membranes stripped if possible. They are offered starting at my 37w appointment. All of the posts about people being discouraged by not being dilated or thinking that b/c they are already 2 cm that labor is imminent sealed my decision to wait.

I'd rather not have one at all, because it doesn't seem to really tell you anything and instead we have a lot of frustrated women sitting around the Bump saying "I've been at 1 cm for weeks!" You go into labor when you go into labor and knowing I'm 2 cm dilated and however much effaced isn't really going to change that. I wish I could talk my doctor out of it, but he said he needs to do at least one next week to make sure LO is head down. I told him fine, but I don't want to hear about "progress."

Had one last week at 36 weeks (they also did the GBS)

Last time that was the only way I knew I was in labor. Like the PPs story...went in for my appt and was at 5cm. Dr sent me to the hospital and DD was born that afternoon!

They can tell from the outside too, fyi if you really don't want the internal. Never heard of doing an internal to determine if baby is head down or not.

My docs/midwives start offering at 37 weeks but I opted out with DS1 until 39 weeks 3 days and plan to do the same with this one. So no internal for me yet. I figure why mess down there if we don't have to...to each their own.

I had my first at 37 weeks. They probably wouldn't have even done one then, but I had been having a couple contractions.

My doctor doesn't do them until you're at 37 weeks- internals can "stir things up" and they wouldn't want to send you into labor before being full term. I just learned yesterday that since my LO is breech, I won't be having any internals....

I haven't had any yet, and I'm glad. The last thing I need is more false hope! My OB's office policy is no internals until 39w unless mom is having excessive pressure, pain, bleeding, etc.

I go for my 37wk appt tomorrow morning. He said we would be doing an internal then. He said last week that 36wks was too early.

I just had mine Monday- he said he wont have to do it next week.... they had to swab me for a bacteria test... then he put his fingers in there, said baby is head down... told me I dropped a bit and my cervix is closed.... that was about it....

I won't be getting my first until next week at my 38w appt, I thought it was a little strange but unfortunately my OB isn't exactly the kind of dr that sticks around for you to ask questions when she is done with whatever she needs to do at the appt.

I'll get my very first one at 40 weeks if I haven't had her by then, probably just to decide if and when I need to be induced or not. Was kind of disappointed, but yet not because I don't want to get false hope if I'm dilated a little bit and don't go into labor for weeks!
