Advice please- is this a growth spurt?

DS is 3.5 weeks old and today/last night have been rough. He is normally an extremely sweet, easy going little guy but today has been very fussy and unsettled. He has been wanting to eat more often than normal which is what makes me think growth spurt but seems upset when eating, often fussing and pulling off the breast. He has reflux so I am not sure if that is getting worse or his meds aren't working and maybe that's why he is fussing? He will pull off and gag/choke and frantically try to latch on again. This evening he has been eating every 1 to 1.5 hours. Does fussiness correspond with a growth spurt? Why is he pulling off the breast? Or do you think this is more of a reflux issue?

  • My LO did this around the same time, he would pull back and choke because he was too eager to eat and would end up with too big of a gulp.

  • About 4wks is when a growth spurt happens. It certainly sounds like a growth spurt to me. Eating every hour or so is the big indicator to me. My children always got/get fussy with growth spurts too.

  • C had what I think wad a growth spurt this week and same. I think the fussing was bc she was hungry and not getting milk as fast as she wanted it
"Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies. God damn it, you've got to be kind." - Kurt Vonnegut
  • This is exactly how DD was with her growth spurts.  She would eat every 1-1.5 hrs, fuss at the breast like she didn't want to eat (so it took forever to feed her!), cry, squirm, etc.  Then the next 24 hrs, she slept like a log.  Now we are back to the normal routine.  I think if it is over in a day or two, it was probably a growth spurt.  If it continues past a few days, maybe reevaluate the reflux meds.
