MIL still insists there's no need to get a booster for whooping cough

so on the weekend DH asked his mum if she's got the booster shot for whooping cough. Some time ago i wrote on this board about the huge argument we had about the need for our extended family to get boosters because there is a big epidemic in adults at the moment........ so my family did the right thing and got boosters - with out fuss - but his side just thought i was being paranoid!!!

so when DH raised it again over the weekend just gone - MIL said she didn't see hwy she had to, because she never had to when her Neice was born 2 years ago and the small country town they live in doesn't have a break out.

I just don't get it!!! how hard is it to spend 5 mins getting a quick jab just to keep the peace - DH doesn't get the fuss - he said he would send his mum to the Dr to get the Drs opinion (lucky for me - my dad manages the medical centre in the town my MIL lives so guess he'll be telling all his Drs  to make sure new grandparents get boosters!

For me it's simple - i told DH last night if she doesn't get a booster then she can't visit the baby! HA take that!

Re: MIL still insists there's no need to get a booster for whooping cough

  • Hmmm...this one rubbed me the wrong way.  I can understand keeping your baby away from someone when they are actually sick or when they are smoking, but to insist that someone get a certain type of medical treatment is a little overboard.  I understand your concern and if MIL were actually sick at the actual time your baby is near her that is one thing. But to keep her away from her grandchild in general because she doesn't have certain shots is a bit ridiculous. IMO.

  • when dd was born, my parents and dh got the shot on their own without me asking.  in fact, i was the only one who didn't get it.  we went into the pediatrician's office when dd was two days old, and her pedi at the time was really pissed off that i hadn't had the shot.  she offered to do it for me then and there.  i'm really needle phobic and have definitely passed over a lot of medical treatments over the years due to my phobia (note that i had a homebirth with dd to avoid having an IV), so i was really upset that the doctor was pushing the shot on me.  she started yelling at me about how "babies die!"  so we found a new pediatrician within the week.

  • I just talked to my doctor about this on Monday.  She said that we (me, my husband and all grandparents that will be spended any extended amount of time with the baby) absolutely need to get the vaccine.  I am with you...you don't get the shot, you don't see the baby.  PERIOD.

  • I am in the "get the shot or I will keep bugging you to get it!" camp.  I've been bothering my dad now for months.  This post reminded me to bug him once more, knowing that he has several doctors appointments today.  Sadly, I missed his GP appointment by a day.  He did agree to get one, he's just a little LAZY.  I really hope his wife gets one too.

In my area, I have personally known one family who did have whooping cough about a month ago.  The dad ended up in the ER twice and had several broken ribs from the intense coughing.  After hearing about their battle and knowing how infants can easily die from it, I understand not allowing people who haven't been vaccinated around the baby.

  • There is an outbreak in California, where I live, too.  I asked my in-laws what they thought and they agreed that they would go get the booster.  Not a big deal.  Especially since children usually get it from their relatives.  I don't know if I would take such a hard stance with them, just because I don't like to wage war with my in-laws.  I'm sorry they are being such a pain.  It seems to me that they would be happy to take any precaution necessary, especially since it is so easy to keep from getting Whooping Cough.  I would probably send my MIL a link to what a baby sounds like that has Whooping Cough.  It's pretty heartbreaking.

I can understand that you have a phobia - but let me put it this way if your baby wasn't comfotable in a baby car seat you stop using one...... to me it's pretty clear cut - you might not have a car accident and your baby might be fine belt but at the same time you might have an accident..... i agree in an area where there is an epidemic you might not catch whooping cough but then again you might - if you can prevent any harm to a baby by a simple injection why wouldn't you??????

  • The only one in our family who hasn't had it is my BIL who is a doctor.  My parents and ILs all got it before I even asked.  They were told by there doctors that adults can be carriers without exhibiting any symptoms and unknowingly expose children.  Guess it's time for DH to start working on his brother.

Ditto, there is an outbreak here in CA so this is important to us. On top of it, of the family that does live close, everyone has a spouse that works in the medical field, seeing patients at hospitals. As a result I feel that we have higher exposure and more of a reason for the family to get it, because we are so highly exposed to things that are at the hospital.
