so on the weekend DH asked his mum if she's got the booster shot for whooping cough. Some time ago i wrote on this board about the huge argument we had about the need for our extended family to get boosters because there is a big epidemic in adults at the moment........ so my family did the right thing and got boosters - with out fuss - but his side just thought i was being paranoid!!!
so when DH raised it again over the weekend just gone - MIL said she didn't see hwy she had to, because she never had to when her Neice was born 2 years ago and the small country town they live in doesn't have a break out.
I just don't get it!!! how hard is it to spend 5 mins getting a quick jab just to keep the peace - DH doesn't get the fuss - he said he would send his mum to the Dr to get the Drs opinion (lucky for me - my dad manages the medical centre in the town my MIL lives so guess he'll be telling all his Drs to make sure new grandparents get boosters!
For me it's simple - i told DH last night if she doesn't get a booster then she can't visit the baby! HA take that!
Re: MIL still insists there's no need to get a booster for whooping cough
Hmmm...this one rubbed me the wrong way. I can understand keeping your baby away from someone when they are actually sick or when they are smoking, but to insist that someone get a certain type of medical treatment is a little overboard. I understand your concern and if MIL were actually sick at the actual time your baby is near her that is one thing. But to keep her away from her grandchild in general because she doesn't have certain shots is a bit ridiculous. IMO.
I am in the "get the shot or I will keep bugging you to get it!" camp. I've been bothering my dad now for months. This post reminded me to bug him once more, knowing that he has several doctors appointments today. Sadly, I missed his GP appointment by a day. He did agree to get one, he's just a little LAZY. I really hope his wife gets one too.
In my area, I have personally known one family who did have whooping cough about a month ago. The dad ended up in the ER twice and had several broken ribs from the intense coughing. After hearing about their battle and knowing how infants can easily die from it, I understand not allowing people who haven't been vaccinated around the baby.
I can understand that you have a phobia - but let me put it this way if your baby wasn't comfotable in a baby car seat you stop using one...... to me it's pretty clear cut - you might not have a car accident and your baby might be fine belt but at the same time you might have an accident..... i agree in an area where there is an epidemic you might not catch whooping cough but then again you might - if you can prevent any harm to a baby by a simple injection why wouldn't you??????
Ditto, there is an outbreak here in CA so this is important to us. On top of it, of the family that does live close, everyone has a spouse that works in the medical field, seeing patients at hospitals. As a result I feel that we have higher exposure and more of a reason for the family to get it, because we are so highly exposed to things that are at the hospital.
