Babies: 0 - 3 Months

What works to calm your LO?

C has started inconsolable screaming in the evenings. Nothing has worked to calm her...5 s, carrying, wearing, rocking. Nursing works while she's nursing but not after. She won't take a paci. Help!
"Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies. God damn it, you've got to be kind." - Kurt Vonnegut

Re: What works to calm your LO?

  • LO likes to be tapped on her butt, only thing that is a sure-fire way to calm her in a fit.

  • Usually swaddling, rocking/swaying, talking/singing & putting my face close to hers (kissing her cheeks & hands) will calm her down

    GL mama!

  • E calms down if I hold her so she's laying on her side, facing me, I "shhhh", hold her pacifier in her mouth (she screams louder if it falls out of her mouth), and bounce her a little.  She slowly calms down and when she's calm enough she'll actually suck on her pacifier and make a few noises until she's done.  Another way to calm her down right away is to take my finger and run it from the top of her forehead to the tip of her nose and just keep lightly stroking while shhh'ing.  As soon as I start this, her eyes immediately close and she calms right down.

  • We have to hold LO very close to our chest, shhhh directly into his ear, and pat his butt while standing up either swaying or bouncing. It also has to be dark.

Good luck! I hope you figure out your LO's trick soon!

  • I hold DD's head on my chest and bounce a little. Every bounce I say "huh huh huh huh huh huh" and she calms down usually. Rythmic things Ive found are what works best.
  • Sometimes a bath calms our little bit.  We do a warm bath, nurse, then lay on my chest and pat bottom until he falls asleep (if he didn't already fall asleep at the breast.)  The swing is our wonder machine also.  He goes to daycare in a couple of weeks when I go back to work and they don't have a swing...I see issues coming, he loves the swing and although he sleeps all night in his basket, he always naps in the swing.  During the day when Nate is sreaming, the Moby is great.  I guess it's like being swaddled, only against Mommy.

  • Tonight I discovered that swaying in the mostly dark bathroom with the shower running helps calm A down. In fact, he went from crying to sleeping in about 30 seconds flat. Good luck!

  • We are learning he really likes to be burped. He doesn't burp a lot, but he likes the hard pats on the back. Then he will transition to being curled up in my arms. I love how adorable and small he is.

  • I got a thick, fuzzy, soft blanket and wrap him up in it, lay down in bed on my side, run the fan and cuddle while rubbing his head and cheek, works like a charm! It is the only thing that works to get him back to sleep in the middle of the night as well. I was told numerous times that it is very normal for a baby to develop a "fussy time" where all they do is fuss and cry for no apparent reason at the same time every day, most the time in the evening. • Holding her upright while bouncing her rhythmically up and down saying sh,sh,sh.  I've heard vacuums and car rides are good go to's.

  • DS loves the sound of running water.  Sometimes when its late and I don't feel like laying on the bathroom floor, I go to this youtube video and it will put him right to sleep: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=niwQYZl1uXU

P.S. Welcome to the land of colic. You're in good company :)

  • My LO isn't super fussy but I've always been able to calm him and put him to sleep by sitting on an exercise ball and bouncing while holding him.  It's also a nice little workout!  Works like a charm.
