Breastfeeding issue...

So, baby will be 2 weeks old tomorrow, and it's been a huge ride. I seem to be recovering really well, and he is just amazing. I have been trying to exclusively breastfeed for the past week or so, and it's been rough. He nurses, but we had some pretty bad screaming jags. We thought it was gas, and i'm terrified he will have colic.

I took him to the Dr. today, and he hasn't gained back to his birth weight. The Dr. thinks he's not getting enough calories, so she wants me to supplement one formula feeding for every third feeding.

I've been to the lactation consultant, and i'm doing everything they say to increase my supply, but my little guy is hungry :(

This makes me sad. I know it's fine, but still I don't know why i'm not making enough...

This has turned into a vent, sorry about that...

 Thanks for reading...

On a good note- I am down to below my pre-pregnancy weight! Whohoo!

Re: Breastfeeding issue...

  • Is the pedi or LC having you pump?  My DD lost a little over 10% over her birthweight and was dehydrated so here's the plan I was put on:

    1. Wake to feed every 3 hours (from start of previous feeding)
    2. Nurse 5 mins one side, 5 mins the other, 5 mins one side, 5 mins the other, burping at each switch
    3. Pump 10 mins while DH feeds her a bottle of 1oz -- we started wtih formula until I was pumping enough to use BM in the bottle

The idea was to pump to bring in my milk faster and to help us get of formula quickly.  DD started gaining and I started making more milk.  First the pedi cut us down to 1/2oz in the bottle, still pumping after every feeding.  Then 1/2oz in the bottle after every other feeding, still pumping after every feeding.  Today she told us to stop supplementing and cut the pumping to 4x/day.  I'm naturally a little scared that without the supplementing DD won't continue to gain, but the pedi said the 2oz/day she was getting via bottle wasn't enough to explain the weight she was gaining so hopefully it will continue.

Of course this might not be right for you, but maybe ask the pedi or LC if something similar is warranted?

  • I would suggest to pump to get your milk to come in. I usually pump for about 20 minutes at a time. I also take a supplement called More Milk by Motherlove. I just started it so I am not sure how long it will take, but one of my friends took it and she said it worked for her after 3 days. But she also pumped every hour on the hour to get her milk to come in faster.

  • If you need to suppliment can you use an SNS system?

We had to suppliment for 5 days and this set up worked great. By using it while nursing my breasts were still stimulated to produce milk and our LO did not get used to the ease of using a bottle to feed.

THIS THIS THIS.  DS and I were having nursing issues in the beginning and we used one that the LC gave us.  It was a lifesaver.  Not only were we able to supplement WHILE bf-ing, DS latched/nursed better which stimulated my supply.  We used it for two days and were able to stop because things were a lot better.

  • Sorry to hear it!  I second all PP's... but my story turned out a little different.  Yesterday we saw a lactation consultant who is an 'expert' in tongue-tie... it's where babies/people have a flap under their tongue that restricts its movement (it's called the frenulum linguae, or lingual frenulum.)  Tongue tie's medical term is ankyloglossia... Long story short, my LO lost 15% of her birthweight in 4 days because she wasn't getting anything to eat, even when she tried desperately at my breast. Like yours, she was increasingly upset/screaming while feeding... We thought colic/gas too, until we went in and realized she just wasn't getting anything to eat.  She was pooping and peeing, but tiny amounts, and since I didn't know what to look for in the beginning, I didn't know it was so bad.  (Now, big heavy pee diapers and giant poop blowouts later, I realize there was a huge difference!!)

Anyway, we're taking LO in to get her tongue-tie clipped next week.  It's something that not all doctors "believe in" or know what to look for - lactation consultants and dentists are actually the main advocates for the issue.  (Dentists see all kinds of complications with cavities/etc because the tongue-tie restricts a person from cleaning around the back teeth with the tongue - like how we get popcorn kernels and stray pieces of meat out!)  Look into it and see if it looks familiar - if you want resources from my LC I'd be happy to send them to you or post them.

    GL!!  I feel for you!

  • Hang in there mama!

I have had a few issues with him getting enough as well.  He wasnt at his birth weight at his 1 week appt. So we have to go back this Friday for a weight check. I have been pumping and FF him since he falls asleep at the breast. He is starting to get a little better about staying awake but he wont wake for anything once he passes out! I had the nurses in the hospital help and LC help. We tried undressing him which just makes him scream and just claw at me, so we don't even go there anymore. The cheek tickle, arm pumping, wiggling around...a little less clothing. He just is bored by the boob! He takes a bottle like a champ though! I am getting a little frustrated with all this back and forth crap and it seems like a lot of work.

Happy mommy to a sweet baby boy! CafeMom Tickers

I would also suggest this- I was on magnesium during/after my birth due to pre-e which causes your milk to be delayed. Long story short my milk did not come in fully until day 6 but I had colostrum but LO wasn't going to get enough in those 6 days on colostrum alone so we did this. I used a nipple shield and fed the thin feeding tub into the shield so when LO would feed he was getting colostrum, stimulating the nipple and also getting formula supplement through the tube but to him it was all coming from the nipple so he didn't get confused and it helped my milk come in fully. We had to do this for about 2 days until I knew my milk came in. By his 1 week dr apt he had gained 9 oz which put him at 1oz under his birth weight. I had help to do this before we left the hospital from the LC.
