what's next? seriously...

My two older kids are sick. They have sinus infections and one has an ear infection on top of the sinus stuff. I am getting it... completly miserable today. I had all three kids at the doctor today.

Doc wanted to look at Xander and make sure he wasn't coming down with our bug too, no big deal. Then we got to discussing his throwing up. Over the last two days, ds has projectile vomited most of his feedings. He is then happy for an hour and then screaming mad because he is hungry. The doctor wasn't too concerned until I mentioned Pryloric Stenosis. My dad, two of my little brothers and my nephew had this and it requires surgery to fix. So we opted to switch formula to Prosobee and see if that helps. If he shows more signs of this then they will do an ultrasound to watch the formula pass through into his stomach. If it can pass through, then it was the type of formula. If it can not pass and he projectile vomits it back up, then it is off to surgery we go.

My dad is worried half to death about Xander now. 20 years ago when my little brothers had this, it was often ignored by doctors and dismissed as reflux or improper feeding. My little brother was so dehydrated by day nine of life that he was so weak and they gave him a 50/50 shot of coming though the surgery. They have come a long way in the surgery itself but most of the time you can't get a doctor to even look for it. My ped said to wait three weeks to see if the new formula helps. But if he throws up every feeding, he won't make it three weeks. I am giving him 3 days and then I will take him down to the peds ER and get nasty until they do the ultrasound on his belly. It is the least invasive procedure, whe not check it out?

Re: what's next? seriously...

  • I had a friend who's little boy had PS, he got surgery done at 4 mo old because his doctors kept poo-pooing him. Poor thing, I hope if that is it then it's treated sooner than later.

  • I think that you are being an important advocate for Xander, after all that is your job! I am glad your pedi is taking this a bit more seriously, but clearly he is not taking it seriously enough (IMO). I am gad Xander is not sick, that would certainly really complicate things. I hope the new formula helps with the throwing up, keep us updated? ((hugs))
  • Awe thanks, yeah I will keep you guys updated. We have kept the full feed down for this last feed so that is a good sign. If it was PS, (unless it is in the very early stages) he probably would have thrown it up. I have to go out tonight and get the different formula. Good thing I used to work at the store that I bought the formula at because I called up there and asked about exchanging the formula and they aren't supposed to exchange or refund it but they are going to do it for me. Unfortunately, I have to wait until dh gets home from work at 1130pm.

I agree that the doctor is crazy if he thinks that I am going to wait 3 weeks for this to get worse. My little brothers damn near died at about nine days and I won't let it happen to my son. We know there is a history of it in my family and since it is just an u/s to diagnose, better be safe than sorry.
