I am currently on bed rest due to a short cervix and a cerclage was placed at 21w1d. My doctor said as a precaution, he will give me a fFN test this week. I know that a negative result is more accurate than a positive result, but I can't help to fear the worst. Although a negative result will make me feel so great, I know that a positive result will make me a nervous wreck. Just curious how this worked for other ladies in the past.
Re: fFN Test, what was your experience?
I had a FFN test done last week, and it was negative. My ob explained it like this:
IF its negative, there is a 99% chance that you will still be pregnant in 2 weeks. Pregnancy is pretty unpredictable, but still a really good chance labor isn't imminent.
IF its positive - it's less of a finding. They do it more to look for a negative result. If its positive, my ob said that it doesn't mean you will go in to labor in the next two weeks, but it doesn't mean you won't, either. There is no % for the positive finding.
He told me if mine was positive I was going to have to head to L & D to get checked out (but bear in mind I've already been there for 3 days once a few weeks ago for PTL/funneling cervix, and have had a pretty unpredictable cervix with no cerclage, and didn't feel my contractions - so my situation is a little different).
I had my first FFN test last Friday. I had a rescue cerclage placed at 19w 3d and my membranes were bulging at the time so it was pretty bad.
Because of my membranes being exposed at the time of my cerclage back in January my doctor felt very strongly that I would likely have a positive result but as others have said, a positive doesn't give as much info as a negative result. So a positive result should always be taken with a grain of salt.
Mine turned out to be negative after all, so you just never know. Good luck!
I had a positive at 29 weeks and was told to not worry about it, just let it be. I didn't I went ahead and got bags packed, had family come over and help finish the nursery/clean the house because I didn't want to risk it. I went into labor a week and a half after the positive result..so my positive wasn't a false positive. Luckily I was very intune with my body and got to the hospital within 30 mins of regular contractions and they were able to stop the labor (after 5 days on mag-sulfate..AHHH). Its a great test, and although ob's will tell you to not worry about a positive...take my advice, get ready just incase it wont hurt to be prepared! I sure was glad I had bags packed otherwise my DH would have had to get all I needed and we all know how efficient hubbys are! ha
best of wishes!!
I had them every 2 weeks with my last pregnancy and since having PTL this time around I'm back on track getting them every 2 weeks again.
I was told a negative means there's a 99% of NOT delivering in the next 2 weeks, a 1% of delivery.
I was told a positive means that there's a 73% chance of NOT delivering in the next 2 weeks and a 27% of delivering.
Both results are not a great indication though and I know a lot of OB's that won't even do them because of how unreliable they are. I've been told by all of my peri's and OB's that if it were to come back + they'd just watch even more closely than they already are and I'd be hospitalized for 24 hours to receive Betamethasone injections and then placed on strict bedrest with weekly appts and cervix checks.
