Pampers Swaddlers vs Huggies Whatevers (the NB diapers)

As you can tell by my post title, I don't care so much for the Huggies NB diapers. They leak constantly (EVERY diaper requires an outfit change as well, even though it's not enough to be a blowout.) and don't fit as well around my little peanut's tiny thighs.

Pampers Swaddlers though, I have to say, are magnificent. I think they're cuter (that matters to me, yes I'm shallow) and seem to hold more, and fit her tiny thighs and hips better. I don't have any other NB diapers to review since I still have half a box of the pampers and huggies to get rid of (thank you to my sister!) but this is my review.

Is anyone else using other NB diapers? What about cloth diaperers? I have a few cloth diapers to use but they're too big for my LO at the moment so that's why we're using sposies. And what brand of CDs are you using? I only have a few Bum Geniuses.

Re: Pampers Swaddlers vs Huggies Whatevers (the NB diapers)

  • Tiffany, you read my mind! The huggies NB suck!!!!!!! I have a little baby. He was 5lbs 6 oz when we brought him home. The hospital sent me home with 4 packs of Pampers Swaddlers NB (20 in a pack) and we used those first. I then moved on to diapers I got from my shower and I first tried the Huggies. The suck! I too had trouble with them leaking out the sides by his legs. It was like they are too big or something. I never had a problem with the Pampers Swaddlers leaking and I got pretty ticked off about the Huggies. I won't be using them again.

I am now onto a pack of Luv's in the new born size. The package states that it is for up to 10lbs. I don't find that accurate. Xander was weighed exactly a week ago and was 6lbs7oz and has gained on average of 12 oz in a week. I am guessing that he is no more than 7lbs12oz or so now. I find that the Luv's diapers are too small for him at this point. He isn't even 8lbs and they seem too small and for something that is supposed to fit up to 10lbs, that is off to me. I think the quality is alright for the money as they are about $3 cheaper than the other diapers. If I were to buy Luv's again this week, I would go with a bigger size.

I have to say for now, we will be using the Pampers Swaddlers. Usually, as the baby gets bigger I will look into other (cheaper) options like the Parent's Choice or Target Brand.

  • Same here. Huggies NB are bigger around the legs then Pampers are and with my 6lb little guy it doesn't work well. DS has peed out of huggies soooo many times that I have lost count. We haven't had that issue with Pampers.

Also, we have tried the Target brand NB and those are the same problem except worse then the Huggies. I am sure once he puts on some weight the Target brand will work find but his legs are just not chubby enough to make a tight seal.

  • Ugh, I also hate the Huggies NB diapers. Big nasty breastmilk blowout diapers that required a change of clothes for both of us a couple of times.

Lena is still only 7.5lbs and we're just using size 1's. I really like the pampers swaddlers and the Luvs. I'm also shallow and like the cuteness of the design on the luvs ;)

  • Yeah we have had bad experience with huggies too. Our hospital also used the pampers swaddlers and they worked well. We had a box of huggies pure and naturals and a box of lil snugglers and LO would have a pee leak everytime- out the top of the diaper or out the side. I thought maybe it was because he was a boy and they are better suited for girls, but from the sounds of it they just suck all together. So we have 1.5 packs left of those I will be giving to a friend who has a girl so hopefully they work better for her ?!

We LOVE the 7th generation ones, we have had no leaks at all. They are super absorbent and free of chlorine dyes, etc. However they are not very "cute" as they are a natural light tan color since they have no dyes/perfumes like most diapers.  We have a stockpile of 7th Generations that we have now bought, and also we have pampers swaddlers once he finally gets to size 1 since my husbands mom got us a box of like 240 from her friend that works at a hospital for dirt cheap. If we like the swaddlers still we will continue to order them through his mom's friend since we can get a box of 240 for like $20. We also had a box of pampers lil snugglers size 1 from our shower, and we returned them last night.

  • We had been using Pampers Swaddlers too, but switched to Huggies because the Pampers smell awful. Even the non-Dry Max ones seemed to have an awful chemical smell that bothered my sinuses. They were better as far as keeping stuff in, but we haven't had a bad experience with the Huggies. And now DD smells like baby rather than diaper chemical.

  • I got a couple packs of Huggies Snugglers from my midwife's office, and they've actually worked better for me than the Swaddlers, mostly because of the cut-out for the umbilical stump (just makes groggy midnight diaper changes easier, I guess).

I do notice that the Pampers diapers are a little more sturdy, construction-wise, though.

  • I have tried the pampers swaddlers.Fit DS very well, but I dont like the mesh stuff inside.

I have also tried the Huggies snugglers... and although I havent had any leaks with those, they only fit "okay"....

the BEST I have found.... is the Huggies Pure and Natural NB diapers. They are fab! And fit DS perfectly! He was 6lbs 15oz at birth, and is now 7lbs 9oz.

    I LOVE these diapers!

  • we're using huggies pure and natural and I love them. I haven't really had issues with diapers other than LUVS.  They seem to swell a lot more than other diapers (huggies or pampers) and don't "form" fit.

  • I was having issues with Huggies NB too! He have to put them on tight or be pees right up the front. I thought I was going crazy late at night when he soaked threw 2 pairs of jammies! We uses pampers in the hospital and didnt have an issue. I think the huggies NB are to loose in the thighs too. I am trying to use up our huggies and then on the pampers it is! Once he gets bigger we can look at other cheaper options...until then I am sick of BF poo leaks and him wizzin all over himself!

  • We've used Pampers Swaddlers (Regular & Sensitive), Huggies Snugglers, Earth's Best, and LUVS.  I actually like the Huggies the best, but I really haven't had issues with any of them except the sticky part on the tab of the Pampers sticking to DD's thigh.  Huggies don't have the sticker part, just the velcro.

  • Like most of you, my hospital gave us Pampers Swaddlers too, and we were happy with them.  We had a box of the Huggies from a shower and moved on to those when we ran out of the Pampers.  I didn't have a problem with the Huggies until yesterday (I guess her thighs are chubby enough)... another case of the BM blowout - ALL up the front, in her girl parts, completely covering her cord stump, all the way up to her nipples.  WTF.

I actually like the way the Pampers smell, but the ones we just bought are Dry Max... I'm afraid of the chemical rash that a lot of people seem to report.  We still have a few Huggies to go through before switching back to the Pampers.

Anyone remember if their pack of 20 from the hospital was the kind with Dry Max or not?!
