Cold sores

I have had cold sores my entire life and they are a product of my mom kissing me on the lips when she had a cold sore.  I have been terrified of LO getting cold sores and decided, regardless of cold sore or not, to only kiss her on the cheek or the top of the head.  

Well today I have been kissing her on the cheek and top of the head and a couple of hours ago I began to feel a tingling on my lip and thought "Oh, no I hope that isn't a cold sore" and now I can clearly see that it is one.  I am worried now about LO and I have made sure that I cleaned her hands, face, and head and have been super precautious with her now.  I mean like germophobe hand washing, etc.  Does anyone else get cold sores and worry about giving them to LO or am I alone on this boat?

    i've gotten them my whole life as well and i actually got one a week after i had her.  talk about totally freaked out of my mind!! yeah, i don't really kiss her either and it breaks my heart.....but, i HATE having cold sores and don't want to pass it along to LO.

    Yeah, I'm just worried about the cheek and top of head kissing from earlier today.

    okay I also get cold sores..and as a result of my csection I happened to get one horrible one where my entire lip swelled up.  I had also kissed my newborn daughter on the cheek...etc.  I always told myself not to kiss near her lips.  I PANICKED until my dad (who is a dr.) told me not to worry, and just make sure I don't kiss her anymore.  I went on my antiviral meds, and when I saw the pedi he also told me not to worry!  So just don't kiss her anymore and keep washing your hands before you touch her and try not to touch your lip.

    I don't want to freak you out but just two days ago I was hanging out with a friend who has a 9 month old who has a bump right under his lip - her and her husband get cold sores, but neither of them have had one recently... she took her LO to the doc and the doc said the bump on LOs lip is a cold sore - she said the virus is passed in her breast milk

    That is scary, who knew.  We FF though....so I just have to worry about touching her.  Tongue Tied

    It is not passed through breastmilk.  I just looked on the acog website.

     I take Valtrex for my cold sores.  You could talk to your doctor about getting a prescription for it.

    This is the dumbest thing I've ever heard.  A cold sore on a 9 month old would not be a "bump."  It would be a huge freakin' lesion because a baby's immune system would allow the outbreak to be massive.  It would be obvious if it was a cold sore especially to people that regularly get them.  If cold sores were passes through breast milk, so would genital herpes and chicken pox.  Anyone who's had chicken pox would not be allowed to BF because it would be too dangerous.  Herpes lives in the nervous system.  Its not blood borne like HIV or hepatitis.   Your friends need to find a new pedi.

    I give up trying to get a ticker.  I have a DD that is 2.5 years old and is awesome.  Maybe I'll add a quote to distinguish myself.  Hmmm.  How about...
