Success after IF

Help Miles poop please!

He's been having a hard time pooping.  For a couple of weeks it was like he wouldn't go for a few days and then he'd go BIG.  Then repeat.  But he only pooped once last week and now he hasn't pooped since Friday.  The pedi said to give him Miralax twice a day.  I've been able to get him to take one full dose per day...the second has never been a full dose.  (You mix it with his 8oz. drink and he rarely drinks an entire 8 oz at once.)  I gave him blueberries Saturday because I had seen it recommended on here.  Still nothing.  Been trying to get him to drink more fluids and stay away from cheese and dairy products, but he's still stopped up.

No poo since Friday evening and that was hard and not very much.

I'm not going to lie.  A dear friend of ours found out her daughter had cancer because she was constipated.  The DD ended up in the hospital for a ton of really difficult tests and one major surgery.  She avoided chemo because they were able to get it all out with surgery.  Well, given my MAJOR family history of cancer I'm terrified beyond belief that there's something bigger going on here.

I know it's illogical because it's only been 4 days technically...but 4 days WITH Miralax.

So please help me, help my kid poop.  Crying

  • Jordana has been on miralax for MONTHS and 3 cap fulls a day and it does NOTHING! Only way she poops is with an enema. We just started this mineral oil but it doesn't seem to work for her either. We have had her tested for everything under the sun. You can try Little Tummies Laxatives or suppostory as well.

Poor guy! I know my pedi says anal stimulation (ie, an anal thermometer) will work sometimes. Back when DD was having major issues pooping, it did work for her *most* times. I just put Vaseline on the probe & left it in for about a min. Then normally no more than 30 min later, she'd poop. Can't hurt, might help? Is he constipated or in pain? If so, I'd ask my pedi to run some tests to look more into it - explain your fear. If s/he is a good doctor, he'll do something to ease your concerns. GL.

  • not sure it'll unplug him, but Ava has the nicest BM's from FLAX SEED OIL in her smoothies, or yogurt. She's a mess without it.  Just a tsp. daily. Trader Joes has a killer deal on it.

And at the risk of sounding dismissive (which I'm not trying to be...)

He does not have cancer. He's constipated. He's ok, mom. ;-)

We swear by flax oil too. Elizabeth gets a tsp a day in her yogurt or applesauce and it definitely keeps her regular.

  • My BFF's son is Miles' age and has the same issue.  Its cyclical.  They go a day or two without pooing and then its hard and it hurts.  And then they're afraid of going because it hurts.  And the cycle continues.

My BFF is doing LOADS of extra fiber in his diet and adding Benefiber to his drinks (mixes right in and he won't notice a thing).  She's also doing Miralax.  Additionally, there is a children's stool softener which might help with it being hard and hurting.  Its made by Colace, but its a children's version.  I believe she had to call around a bit to find it.

Its super hard to watch your little guy in pain.  But I'm sure he doesn't have cancer.  These little people just get stopped up and it becomes cyclical.

    Hope he poos soon!  :)

  • Flax seed meal is a life saver at our house.  1 tbsp mixed with something (yogurt, etc) a day has Caro going like clock work.

    I swear by it...

Yup!  Another huge proponent of the flax seed oil.  It works wonders!

  • I will pick up some flax seed oil tonight on my way home.  And D, you didn't sound dismissive...I get it...it's illogical.  I just can't help but go there.  I'm going away from there now though.  :-)  Thanks!

  • We've been doing the PediaLax gummies for a couple of months.  They are basically fiber but do their job well.  I will say the regular supositories work much better than the liquid inserts. (a discussion I never imagined having pre-child)  We cut out most milk and increased water not juice.  DS will drink water saying "this will help me poopy!'
