Intro and exercise question

Hello. My name is Kendra, and I have been on the bump for a couple months now, am new to this board. I am pregnant with my second child! Pretty excited.

With my first pregnancy, I did not exercise at all, and struggled to lose that baby weight. This time, I want to start exercising. The last couple days I have been doing the eliptical and treadmill, but my heartrate gets pretty high, like 170-180, but I feel fine. Is this ok, or should I lower it down

Also, I like doing exercises away from a machine such as mountain climbers, bicycles, jumping jacks, ect. Are those ok to do also?

Any info on exercising and pregnancy are welcome!

Re: Intro and exercise question

  • i'd check with your doctor. it was my understanding that it was ok to maintain your pre-pregnancy routine, but that starting to work out for the first time after getting pregnant wasn't a good idea. i could be wrong though.

  • Pretty much any exercise is okay, as long as you can't take a projectile to the gut or fall down a significant distance.

If you feel okay and can still talk, heart rate isn't that important. Be careful not to overheat or dehydrate, as that is dangerous. Don't push TOO hard - this isn't the time to make big gains in fitness, just more of a time to maintain and stay healthy.

So drink lots, if you can put a fan on you while on the elliptical, do, and don't push beyond your current limits.

  • My doctor told me that I shouldn't let my heart rate go above 60% of max heart rate.  The way you calculate this is...

220 - (your age) = Max Heart Rate

Then take that MHR and divide to find your 60%.  If you notice that your heartrate is getting too high, just back off a bit or just take a little mini break and get some water in you.
