Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

I had to call poison control yesterday

I was so sick yesterday I guess with some sort of flu that DH had, had on Friday. Well they're swamped at work and since he had taken Friday off he couldn't take Monday off too. So, I was on my own! In the middle of the night I had gotten 3 ibuprofen out but I felt sick to my stomach after 2 so I left the 3rd and completely forgot about it the next day.

I was laying in bed and I heard DS making his MMM MMM sound but I figured he was drinking his from his sippy. Then when I got up and took him into the kitchen to give him some lunch I realized his sippy was still on his high chair! That was when the light bulb clicked and I realized that there had been an ibuprofen on my nightstand! I ran in there to discover about half of the pill in a powder form on the floor. I was so panicked I was trying not to flip out! I called poison control and the guy told me that it is very hard to OD on Ibuprofen that you would actually have to take 9 or more pills at his size!!!! He said tylenol was another story though and about 2 or 3 pills and he would have me take him to the ER. HE said really about a half a pill is almost a proper ibuprofen dosage for his weight. I felt so relieved when I heard that. I asked the guy from the call center if that meant I wasn't going to win the mother of the year award and he just laughed.

On the plus side? DS napped for 2.5hrs! Of course being the panicked first time mom I didn't get any rest because I kept going in to make sure he was breathing!

  • girl! This crap has happened to me twice! Once when DD #1 was about 2, which was about 7 years ago, she was with her grandmother on her dads side, and she took one of her high blood pressure meds. She had to be rushed to the hospital, and when I got there they were giving her a tube of charcoal to drink and absorb the medicine. She ended being fine! And then it happened again a couple of weeks ago with DD #2, who is almost 2. She was with my inlaws, and she took one of my FIL Cymbalta pills! I was filling in for someone at my old job, I am a SAHM. So I was pissed that the one day I go to work, they are rushing my baby to the hospital in a ambulance! But she ended up being fine, because it was not a norc. But talk about scary!

  • It was awful I was shaking and so upset even though he seemed happier than ever. I just felt like such a bad mom for not watching him more even if I was sick.
  • I think you could still be mother of the year! It happens to all of us at one time or another. Hope you and DH feel better soon and so glad DS is okay.

OMG that is awful! I know stuff like this happens but it still doesn't make you feel better. At least you have the excuse that you weren't there?

  • I saw that yesterday on FB. I would've been freaking out. Glad to hear Silas is okay though.

Oh I was I felt bad because in the heat of the moment I chewed DH out about it. Even though it wasn't his fault somehow I figured him not staying home made it his fault!

  • Look don't be down on yourself Stick out tongue Sometimes things just get crazy and stuff gets overlooked! I bet it will never happen again because you are aware of it now! Believe me, there are so many things that moms don't say in public, because they are embarassed that they made a mistake! Shoot, I had went all over town for at least a hour, and then got to Chuck E Cheese and realized that DH had never strapped DD's carseat back in, and she had be riding that whole time like that! I about lost my mind! And there was one time, where I put her in her car seat and completely forgot to strap her in! What was I thinking!?!?! Thank God I noticed it before we went too far, but still! Point is, we are moms, not super heros!!!

  • Glad he is okay.  It drives me crazy that my MIL puts all her vitamins and meds in her pocket and then takes them later with her meal.  I have asked her to be more cautious.  Next time I guess I will have to just tell her not to do it.

It's funny because I was always on H about this with motrin. I would constantly find them all over the floor when DS was immobile and I told him multiple times something bad was going to happen. Then who does it happen to? Me!
