Some fabrics need to be washed multiple times to increase absorbency (prepping) - check the FAQs, they should have some good info. Other than that, I wash anything that he's going to wear before it goes on him.
I am prepping my hemp doublers right now... ugh they said 6 times! I figure it will pay off in the long run. The directions also said for prepping to wash them in hot water without detergent, so that's what I'm doing.

Yes. Synthetics and used dipes once, new natural fibres I boiled and then washed (prefolds).
The natural ones won't absorb anything if you don't prep them.
